The GOP Sees Dead People?Voting

Second, many conservatives contend that the reason studies show so little voter fraud is because it?s really hard to catch. It?s also hard to catch murderers, but that doesn?t mean we start locking up everyone in order to prevent people from killing one another. Americans have long subscribed to the notion of innocent until proven guilty; that, as Benjamin Franklin said, ?it is better 100 guilty persons escape than that one innocent person suffer.? Without proof, or even credible evidence that widespread voter fraud exists, saying that it?s difficult to detect is not enough reason to justify stripping the right to vote from millions.

Alana Thompson to Star in Toddlers & Tiaras Spinoff

We really wish we were making this up.

But Alana Thompson - a six-year old contestant on Toddlers & Tiaras known as "Honey Boo Boo" - has landed her very own reality show. It will be titled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and it will consist of six half-hour episodes that provide "an inside look into Alana's world," according to a TLC network statement.

The statement goes on to say that viewers will learn how Thompson "is more than just a Go-Go Juice-drinking beauty queen" and that "when she's not chasing after crowns, Alana's with her family in rural Georgia doing what her family does best: four-wheeling through mud pits and picking up road kill for the family cookout."

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo will also feature Thompson's stay-at-home mom, June Shannon, along with her father, Sugar Bear, and sisters Lauryn "Pumpkin," Jessica "Chubbs," and Anna "Chickadee." Really. That's how they are listed in the press release.

We doubt Vanessa Williams will tune in for this spinoff, but will you?

Los Angeles, CA (May 30, 2012) Female sex offenders receive lighter sentences for the same crimes than males says a study recently published in Feminist Criminology, a SAGE journal and the official journal of the Division on Women and Crime of the American Society of Criminology.

Embry and Lyons looked at the sentences that male and female sex offenders received for specific sex offenses and found that even after the implementation of sentencing guidelines to ensure equality in sentencing, on average male sentences were between 6% and 31% longer than female sentences for the same or similar crimes.

"It appears as if the criminal justice system actually treats women more leniently than men," wrote Randa Embry and Phillip M. Lyons, Jr., authors of the study.

The researchers explained this disparity by discussing the American idea that "women are weaker and, therefore, must be protected at all times regardless of their status as victims or offenders."

Embry and Lyons analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Justice's National Corrections Reporting Program from the years 1994 to 2004. Sex offenses included rape, statutory rape, sexual assault, child sexual assault, and forcible sodomy.

"This leads to the supposition that women, regardless of the departure from social and gender norms committed in concurrence with the offense for which they are being sentenced, continue to be viewed as individuals who should be protected by the justice system," wrote the researchers. "Obviously, as a social institution, the criminal justice system is reluctant to break those social norms and gender roles in response to atypical gendered behavior."

?In the Studio,? How Bizeebee?s Poornima Vijayashanker Fell in Love with Building Software

Screen shot 2012-05-24 at 10.02.57 AM"In the Studio" continues this week with an engineer who began programming at the end high school, double-majored in CS/EE in college, dropped out of Stanford's graduate CS program to become the second employee at Mint.com, and after spending some time at Intuit (which acquired Mint), now has her own company focused on building software for the small-medium business market. Poornima Vijayashanker is not your average engineer. Growing up in a household where electronics were regularly taken apart for fun, she started coding toward the end of high school and ended up majoring in CS for her undergraduate degree. After a brief stint as an R&D engineer for Synopsis, she wanted to dive into the Valley's startup scene and elected to enroll in a master's CS program at Stanford. It was there she initially met Aaron Patzer, the founder of Mint, and when the opportunity arose for her to join the small team, she dropped out of Stanford and helped build the company. From that experience, she ended up at Intuit, where she started plotting her next move, and now is the founder and CEO of Bizeebee, member manage software to help small business manage their customers, inventory, and a host of other services.

Oldest Jewish archaeological evidence on the Iberian Peninsula

ScienceDaily (May 25, 2012) ? Archaeologists of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) found some of the oldest archaeological evidence so far of Jewish culture on the Iberian Peninsula at an excavation site in the south of Portugal, close to the city of Silves (Algarve). On a marble plate, measuring 40 by 60 centimetres, the name "Yehiel" can be read, followed by further letters which have not yet been deciphered. The Jena Archaeologists believe that the new discovery might be a tomb slab. Antlers, which were found very close to the tomb slab in the rubble gave a clue to the age determination.

"The organic material of the antlers could be dated by radiocarbon analysis with certainty to about 390 AD," excavation leader Dr. Dennis Graen of the Jena University explains. "Therefore we have a so-called 'terminus ante quem' for the inscription, as it must have been created before it got mixed in with the rubble with the antlers."

The earliest archaeological evidence of Jewish inhabitants in the region of modern-day Portugal has so far also been a tomb slab with a Latin inscription and an image of a menorah -- a seven-armed chandelier -- from 482 AD. The earliest Hebrew inscriptions known until now date from the 6th or 7th Century AD.

For three years the team of the University Jena has been excavating a Roman villa in Portugal, discovered some years ago by Jorge Correia, archaeologist of the Silves council, during an archaeological survey near the village of S?o Bartolomeu de Messines (Silves). The project was aiming at finding out how and what the inhabitants of the hinterland of the Roman province of Lusitania lived off. While the Portuguese coast region has been explored very well, there is very little knowledge about those regions. The new discovery poses further conundrums. "We were actually hoping for a Latin inscription when we turned round the excavated tomb slab," Henning Wabersich, a member of the excavation reports. After all, no inscriptions have been found so far and nothing was known about the identity of the inhabitants of the enclosure.

Only after long research the Jena Archaeologists found out which language they were exactly dealing with, as the inscription was not cut with particular care. "While we were looking for experts who could help with deciphering the inscription between Jena and Jerusalem, the crucial clue came from Spain" Dennis Graen says. "Jordi Casanovas Mir? from the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona -- a well-known expert for Hebrew inscriptions on the Iberian Peninsula -- is sure that the Jewish name "Yehiel" can be read, -- a name that is already mentioned in the Bible." Not only is the early date exceptional in this case, but also the place of the discovery: Never before have Jewish discoveries been made in a Roman villa, the Jena Archaelogist explains.

In the Roman Empire at that time Jews usually wrote in Latin, as they feared oppressive measures. Hebrew, as on the re-discovered marble plate, only came back into use after the decline of the Roman supremacy, respectively in the following time of migration of peoples from the 6th or 7th century AD. "We were also most surprised that we found traces of Romans -- romanised Lusitanians in this case -- and Jews living together in a rural area of all things," Dennis Graen says. "We assumed that something like this would have been much more likely in a city."

Information about the Jewish population in the region in general was mostly passed down by scriptures. "During the ecclesiastical council in the Spanish town Elvira about 300 AD rules of conduct between Jews and Christians were issued. This indicates that at this time there must have been a relatively large number of Jews on the Iberian Peninsula already," Dennis Graen explains -- but archaeological evidence had been missing so far. "We knew that there was a Jewish community in the Middle Ages not far from our excavation site in the town of Silves. It existed until the expulsion of the Jews in the year 1497."

In the summer the Jena Archaeologists will take up their work again. Until now they have excavated 160 square metres of the villa, but after checking out the ground it already became clear that the greater part of the enclosure is still covered in soil. "We eventually want to find out more about the people who lived here," Graen explains the venture. "And of course we want to solve the questions the Hebrew inscription has posed us."

PFT: 'Frustrating,' Tebow says after 2 INTs

pg2_g_jevans1_400Getty Images

For nearly a year, there?s been a sense that the Saints and quarterback Drew Brees will work out a long-term deal soon.? And for nearly a year ?soon? hasn?t happened.

Now, Brees? teammates are echoing the ?soon? mantra.

?It?s definitely different,? Pro Bowl guard Jahri Evans said Thursday regarding the absence of Brees from Organized Teams Activities, via comments distributed by the team.? ?I think this is the first time we?ve actually had practices without Drew here, but we all understand the nature of this business and believe it?s going to get done soon.?

Evans clearly prefers sooner to later.? ?I think everybody wants him back here, but we also know nothing happens overnight,? Evans said.? ?It?s just the nature of the business.? Negotiations are like a tennis match, back and forth, back and forth.? Drew?s a pro at what he does, he can study even if he?s? not here, and he knows what he needs to do to be ready to go, and will be ready to go.?

Even though Evans thinks it will be soon, he has no specific idea as to when soon may be.? ?We just don?t know,? Evans said.? ?It?s uncharted territory.? We know that when?s he?s here, we all are going to be ready to go.?

The key words are ?ready to go.?? The Saints need to be ?ready to go? from Week One, because they need to have the kind of regular season that will allow them not only to make it to the playoffs but also to host postseason games.? Otherwise, they?ll have a much harder time qualifying for the ultimate home game, which this year will be played in their home stadium.

An Interview With Enrique Peña Nieto

I feel what the government did until now, which was not wrong, was to take a decision to fight the criminal organizations ... I have announced publicly that it was a good decision that has nothing to do with what party is in charge in government. It is an obligation of the state which is beyond politics. What can be discussed is the strategy he followed. The strategy was not, in my opinion, the correct one. [Calderon's decided:] Let's go get the crime organizations. For us, the main priority would be to reduce violence. Up to now, there seems to have been a competition between the federal and state governments. Each has been acting independently. The federal government has not shown much collaboration with the states and investment was made mainly in the federal police forces. Not much has been put into the state governments.

Would you keep building up the federal police as Calderon has?

16th-century big thinker Erasmus was censored

More than 400 years before modern-day governments tried shutting down blogs or blocking tweets, two people tasked with censoring a sometimes-critic of the Catholic Church in Renaissance Europe took to their duties in very different ways: one with great beauty, the other with glue and, it appears, a message.

Now, two books, housed at separate libraries at the University of Toronto, illustrate two unusual approaches censors took when dealing with the same author, Erasmus.

Born in Rotterdam around 1466, Erasmus was a prolific writer who sought out wisdom in ancient Greek and Latin texts. His writings, mass produced thanks to the printing press, were at times critical of the Catholic Church.

By the time he died in 1536, the church was breaking apart, with splinter groups known as Protestants coming into conflict with the Catholics. English King Henry VIII was one of the most famous examples of a Protestant, creating a Church of England separate from church authorities in Rome. [ In Photos: A Journey Through Early Christian Rome ]

The conflicts that ensued between Catholics and Protestants were fought not just with guns and swords, but with ideas, especially the printed word. Erasmus was considered by some to be a Protestant sympathizer, and in 1559 his texts were put on a Roman index of forbidden books. Both sides tried to censor each other whenever they could, with the Catholics being somewhat more effective, at least during the 16th century.

"They had the agents to be able to do it," said Pearce Carefoote, a librarian at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto and author of "Forbidden Fruit: Banned, Censored, and Challenged Books from Dante to Harry Potter" (Lester, Mason & Begg, 2007).

"Protestants didn't have that same ability in the 16th century," Carefoote added, noting that Protestants didn't have the same level of organization.

Censoring with glue ... and words
One book, "Adagorium," was published in 1541 in Lyon, France, and was cataloged this month in the Thomas Fisher Library. The book contains ancient proverbs written in Latin and Greek along with commentary by Erasmus.

Parts of it are blotted out with ink, a practice not unusual for the time. However, one section was treated with particular disdain, having pages ripped out, sections inked out and two of the pages actually glued together, still stuck after more than 400 years. [ See Photos of the Censored Books ]

"They've censored it, and then just to make sure they glued the page together," Carefoote told LiveScience. "This is the first time I've ever seen that (the use of glue)."

If that wasn't enough, the censor appears to have left a message on the front, written in Latin, blasting Erasmus. It reads (in translation), "O Erasmus, you were the first to write the praise of folly, indicating the foolishness of your own nature." One of Erasmus' works was called "The Praise of Folly."

Carefoote cautioned that the message could've been written by another person, though the ink seems to match that of the censor. From the style of writing Carefoote thinks the censorship may have occurred late in the 16th century but more research is needed to firm up that date.

Erasmus' ideas on war seem to have gotten lots of ink; that section of the book begins with the adage "Dulce bellum inexpertis," or "war is sweet to those who haven't experienced it." The censorship starts out slow at first with just a sentence blotted out here and there, but picks up later with entire sections being inked over. Carefoote suspects some Catholics would not have been amused by these ideas on war.

"He would not have gone along with the basic 'just war' theories that the scholastics (a group of thinkers) had developed," Carefoote said of Erasmus. [ The History of Human Aggression ]

After it was censored, the book was likely kept in a restricted library called an inferno, Carefoote suggests. That would've made reading it difficult. "Say this was kept in a cathedral library, in a Catholic town, what you would have to do is, you would have to put in a petition to one of the church officials," he said. "They would examine your reasons for why you need to see this book and they would give permission to let you read it."

The book was bequeathed to the library by the late Ralph Stanton, an avid collector of books and a mathematics professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Censoring with beauty
In contrast to the newly discovered glued-up book, another example of Erasmus' writing, held at the Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies at the University of Toronto, reveals a censor who took to his task with an artistic flourish.

Published in Basel, Switzerland, in 1538 this book contains essays by Erasmus introducing the writing of St. Ambrose, a fourth-century saint who was the bishop of Milan.

    4. 16th-century big thinker Erasmus was censored

"It is one of the most exquisitely beautiful examples of censorship, with the offending passages obliterated using vibrant watercolors framed in baroque scroll frames with attending putti (an image of a male child)," Carefoote writes in his 2007 book. While the censor blanked out the prefaces by Erasmus he left the saint?s work alone. It's not known what Erasmus said that got him censored. It's also not known why the censor, probably a librarian, approached his job with such artistry.

"You have some librarians who just love books and so it could have been that the book itself he wanted to preserve in as good a state as he possibly could, so therefore he complied with the law but he did it in such a way that it was not offensive to the book," Carefoote said.

Or perhaps, deep down, the censor actually sympathized with Erasmus' work. "Maybe he sympathized with Erasmus and so he wasn't going to the extremes that (the other person) did," Carefoote added.

Whatever the reasons, these censors have left researchers with two remarkable 16th-century artifacts, now within walking distance of each other. Two works by the same author, both of which were censored, one with glue and the other with artistic beauty.

carolinabrewers Carolina Brewing Company Named Best Brew in the Triangle

?

Carolina Brewing Company Named Best Brew in the TriangleThe 2012 Reader?s Choice Award for Best Brew in the Triangle went to Carolina Brewing Company, and it?s easy to see why! This company, which took home a whopping 32% of the votes, has some of the most delicious and unique beers the Triangle has to offer. We?re getting ahead of ourselves though; let?s back up to when the company first got its start in 1992. Back then, it was the brainchild of brothers John and Greg Shuck, who were brewing beer in their basements! When friends and family complimented their concoctions, the siblings decided to start their own brewery. Though local to Seattle, the pair decided that the East was par for the course. There wasn?t much competition in the area at the time, and Raleigh seemed like the perfect place to get things going. Everything just zoomed ahead from there, and now the brewery is one of the most well-known in the Triangle, offering a wide range of original beers and giving jam-packed free tours every weekend!

Carolina Brewing Company Named Best Brew in the TriangleClassic favorites include the Carolina Pale Ale, the Carolina India Pale Ale, and the Carolina Nut Brown Ale. The first is an amber colored, American style beer carefully crafted from three varieties of hops. It?s the perfect mix of bitterness, aroma, and hops taste, and it works well with any meal or just as an indulgence in itself. For those who prefer more hops and a higher alcohol content, the Carolina India Pale Ale is a great choice! Brewed with caramel, cara-pils malts, Cascade, and Crystal hops, you can?t go wrong with this delectable treat. The Carolina nut Brown Ale is a dark brown, medium-bodied ale with a flavor you won?t forget. It?s a mix of chocolate, toasted malt, and the perfect, dry nut-like taste.

True aficionados of the brewery know that there are also four seasonal beers, available only in bottles at the brewery. For Spring, there?s the fresh and playful Carolina Spring Bock. In the summer, relax by the pool and cool down with Carolina Summer Wheat. Celebrate the crisp, seasonal air of Fall with a Carolina Oktoberfest Lager, and get all goaded up in winter with the rich Carolina Winter Porter.

There are even a few special beers offered by the brewery as well. These include Anniversary Beers, which are released on July 3rd each year, and mark the brewery?s beginnings. Past offerings include an Imperial IPA, and this year a Belgian Trippel is in the works! There are also Groundhog Day beers to celebrate everyone?s favorite holiday?this year?s offering was a Dunkelweizen!? Special holiday beers get released around Thanksgiving and, last year, included a Barleywine at Thanksgiving and a Wiggo! Ale for Christmas.

With so many awesome choices, strong ties to the community, and just being an all-around fun and high quality company, it?s obvious why the Triangle?s readers would vote Carolina Brewing Company as ?Best Brew in the Triangle.? Congratulations, guys! You deserve it!

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) ? Female soldiers this week are moving into new jobs in once all-male units as the Army breaks down formal barriers in recognition of what's already gone on in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The policy change announced earlier this year is being tested at nine brigades, including one at Fort Campbell, before going Army-wide. It opens thousands of jobs to female soldiers by loosening restrictions meant to keep them away from the battlefield, after the experience on the ground in the past decade showed women were fighting and dying alongside male soldiers anyway.

Col. Val Keaveny Jr., commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team that is among units piloting the change, told The Associated Press that for the last decade it has been common to have women temporarily attached to the combat units and serve alongside them.

"Women have served in our Army since the Revolutionary War and they have done phenomenal work and continue to do so today. There is great talent and now we can have it in the headquarters of infantry, armor and cavalry," he said.

Under the new policy, female officers and non-commissioned officers will be assigned to combat units below the brigade level. The change will open up about 14,000 new jobs for women in the military, but there are still more than 250,000 jobs that remain closed to women.

The new jobs within combat battalions are in personnel, intelligence, logistics, signal corps, medical and chaplaincy. The Army is also opening jobs that were once entirely closed to women, such as mechanics for tanks and artillery and rocket launcher crew members.

The 4th Brigade draws its lineage from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, whose World War II heroics led to books and a TV miniseries called the "Band of Brothers." But these days, Keaveny said there are more than 350 women already serving in the brigade and they will be opening 36 new jobs to women in the battalions.

"For the last 10 years, we have been fighting alongside women. In my experience I have seen that the Band of Brothers quickly integrate their sisters and they are a family," he said.

Capt. Elizabeth Evans, a 44-year-old mother of five, is one of the first women assigned to the combat battalions. She will be serving as a battalion S1, whose job is to oversee personnel issues within the battalion, including awards, casualties, human resources and other administrative responsibilities. She said there is a lot of pride associated with serving in an infantry unit.

"I think there's a rich history in the 101st and especially the 4th Brigade Combat Team," she said. "To me that means something. It means something to be a part of not necessarily history, but to be a part of a once all-male battalion."

Evans, who has deployed to Afghanistan, noted that women have been serving in dangerous jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan for 10 years.

"With the fluidity of the battlefield and how there are no front lines, it just makes more sense to me to allow women to come into those roles, those noncombat staff roles," she said.

Keaveny said these changes will have minimum impact on where women will be located while deployed. Battalion headquarters are generally located at bases where women were already stationed and the Army has been using female engagement teams to reach out to civilians in remote areas.

"Quite honestly we don't see there's going to be any friction," he said.

Kayla Williams, author of "Love My Rifle More Than You: Young and Female in the US Army," served with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team under the 101st Airborne Division during the initial invasion into Iraq as an enlisted soldier in military intelligence.

Early in the war, she wasn't even issued plates for her ballistic vest "because females can't serve in combat," she said. She said she was once attached to an infantry battalion that had no female latrines.

As an Arabic translator, she was attached to infantry units rather than assigned, but doing the same things as her male infantry counterparts, including going on foot patrols and living in remote combat outposts.

"Women have been serving in very forward deployed roles, and women have been serving side-by-side with combat arms personnel, just not in a formalized assigned method," said Williams, who is a fellow at the Truman National Security Project.

She said these incremental changes could improve the professional development of both men and women in the military, but acknowledged that the military still has a long way to go to leveling the field for women.

"It is my personal opinion that the institutionalization of women as not being able to serve in combat arms has a way of subtly allowing sexism within the military," she said.

Evans said she hopes the expanded roles will encourage more women to consider a career in the Army.

"I think for females in general, it's bringing us new avenues for accomplishments, for professional growth. In my personal belief, we are a part of supporting our infantryman," she said.

Android Emulator: Scale size without using Eclipse

As you might have read following my previous post I'm currently experimenting with mobile web solutions. In such a case, having an Android emulator is quite comfortable for quickly testing your solution.

Personally though, I hate the default emulator skin, mainly also because it takes up quite a large portion of your screen. Hence, I normally use a custom emulator skin. But there is the problem of the scaling the size properly as the default settings will most probably go out of your screen.

A couple of years ago I wrote a blog post on how to tune your Android emulator with a custom skin. In that post, I also described on how to scale it properly, by adding the -scale option to the command line arguments from within the Eclipse Run Configuration dialog.

However, if you're only interested in the emulator itself, you may start it by launching the AVD manager directly. In that case, the scale parameter can be directly set when launching your AVD:

Btw, should you have problems connecting to the Internet from your emulator, it might be due to the proxy settings of your (company) network. Have a look at this post then, it might help you.

Will 'Avengers' Be The Year's Biggest Blockbuster?

Box-office expert looks at possible competition from 'Dark Knight Rises,' 'Amazing Spider-Man' and more.
By Kara Warner

Now that so many of us have seen "Marvel's The Avengers" and helped make it this summer's box-office blockbuster to beat, it's time to look ahead at the rest of the season's cinematic offerings to see which tentpole has the power to compete with Earth's mightiest heroes.

The likeliest contender competing for some of the "Avengers"-size box-office haul is "The Dark Knight Rises," Christopher Nolan's dark, brooding, third and supposedly final Batman movie. Other buzz-worthy potential moneymakers to keep an eye on are Ridley Scott's "Alien"-esque prequel "Prometheus," Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man," Rupert Sanders' "Snow White and the Huntsman" and Barry Sonnenfeld's "Men in Black 3."

To be fair, the "Avengers" haul is going to be very difficult to duplicate, particularly the record-breaking opening-weekend take of $207.1 million, which beat the $169.2 million set by previous champ "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," MTV News consulted Boxoffice.com editor Phil Contrino for his wisdom on the subject and to see if any other summer fare has a chance at besting the records set by "Avengers."

"I don't think anything other than 'Dark Knight Rises' can pull it off," Contrino said. "With 'Spider-Man,' every time a franchise is rebooted, it takes a while for the fans to dip their toes in the water and get a feel for it. 'Spider-Man' will be the same thing, maybe worse, because it's so close to the [release] of the original. 'X-Men: First Class' and even 'Batman Begins' didn't open to huge numbers, and a lot of people forget that. 'Prometheus' is [rated] R. For an R-rated movie to do $200 million would be something really monumental, almost impossible, I think."

Contrino went on to say that "Dark Knight Rises" has a couple of factors that will prevent it from catching "Avengers," but that it does have a chance of besting the #2 best opening-weekend gross set by "Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

"It's not in 3-D, so it doesn't have the bonus financial boost, and it's not nearly as family-friendly; it's dark and broody. Disney did a good job of turning 'Avengers' into a family-friendly movie. I think that's ultimately what pushed it as far as it's gone," Contrino said. "I don't see anything else this summer beating it."

Check out everything we've got on "Marvel's The Avengers."
