Mercedes-Benz Experimenting With Google Glass

When you think of Mercedes-Benz, you think of a company that makes high-end luxury vehicles. But with those vehicles come a lot of high-tech hardware and gadgets and the engineers there are working with Google Glass to add more conveniences.

In an interview with the Silicon Valley Business Journal, the President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America, stated that the company's ultimate goal with Google Glass is to create a seemless door-to-door transition involving both in-car navigation and pedestrian walking directions.

The goal is to allow a person to set a destination at home, hop in their car and drive to that destination and then be able to get the remaining walking instructions on their Google Glass. The Google Glass would have to be able to integrate with the vehicles navigation system to get current location, but would eliminate the need for entering information into multiple devices when both walking and driving destinations were required.

The project is still in the works, and they estimate it will be awhile before it hits the market as the cost of Glass is still a factor and most consumers cannot get their hands on one.

Did Walmart just sell out of Microsoft Surface RTs?

Don't look now, but Walmart may have just sold out temporarily of Microsoft's recently discounted Surface RT devices.

outofstock

Yes, those same Surface RTs that Microsoft repriced and are now $350 (plus $100-plus for a keyboard/cover). The Surface RTs that were responsible for Microsoft's $900 million write-down which it took in Q4 FY 2013.

Robert McLaws, Chief Technology of AdvancedREI, tweeted me about what looks to be an "out of stock" situation for 32 GB and 64 GB Surface RTs purchased from Walmart online. Some U.S. stores are still showing availability in-store, however, of one or both Surface RT models.

On its Web site, Walmart is advising customers that they may not have their Surface RT orders filled in stores for another week or so.

Does Walmart's Surface RT stock status prove $350 was the magic price point at which Microsoft initially should have used as its Surface RT entry point a year ago in October, instead of going with $500? Maybe...

It also could be the case that after Microsoft's various Surface discounts -- at its own and others' recent shows and conferences -- more people have had a chance to kick the tires of Surface RT devices. Microsoft officials now believe that Surfaces aren't products that users will shell out to buy online without having at least some, quality hands-on time with them.?

Surface RT: It's about both demand and supply

The bigger and still unanswered questions are how many Surface RT devices Microsoft made and how many it has sold to date. In an internal town hall meeting at Microsoft last week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer admitted to employees that Microsoft made too many Surfaces. (Duh.) But no Softie has said publicly how many Surface RTs were too many -- or how and why Microsoft over-ordered.

Simply taking the two known numbers -- the total write-down and the discount on each Surface RT -- to calculate the number of Surface RTs manufactured is overly simplistic, said Directions on Microsoft analyst Michael Cherry.

The $900 million write-down also included parts and accessories, Cherry noted. And many forget that Apple is the master of tying up critical elements of components the company needs in order to build an adequate supply of consumer electronics.

"When Microsoft decided to step into the world of building tablets I wondered how this differed from what they already built (mice, keyboards, and Xboxes)," said Cherry. "I assumed that a lot of money went into: a) buying parts; b) buying time in a plant; and c) building sub-components such as milling the metal chassis that they were going on about so much."

Because Microsoft was intent on keeping its Surface RT plans secret, Cherry said he assumed a lot of the company's component/part purchasing was done at the last minute, and therefore, "had to cost a lot." In some cases, Surface parts might have been shipped by air rather than container ship, for example, in order to meet last-minute deadlines.

"They also likely had to pay a lot to hold capacity open in case it really took off, which now, there may not be a need for," Cherry added.

We also know that Microsoft is working on what officials called at the company's Worldwide Partner Conference "updates" to the Surface RT and the Surface Pro -- both of which are due to launch some time during Microsoft's fiscal 2014 (which runs from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014). Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner publicly stated these dates and the existence of these updates during his keynote remarks in Houston.

If Microsoft is planning to use any of the same components and parts in its second-generation Surface RT and Surface Pro devices as it does in its generation one models, the $900 million write-down also may include depreciation on those parts.

Once Microsoft goes public with specifics about the next Surface RT and Surface Pro devices, further/new discounts on the current models also will be likely. I'd think Microsoft officials would have figured any future discounts into this $900 million figure, rather than have to do another write-down during a future quarter.

Microsoft officials aren't saying anything more about Surface RT's past or futures. They are insisting that positioning the Surface RT more clearly as an iPad competitor, but one that's more focused as a productivity tablet, will help it gain market momentum. ?

Check out this Game Boy emulator running on a Google Chromecast

Google?s Chromecast media-streaming device is just a few days old, so developers are just beginning to figure out what the device is capable of. In the next few weeks, it?s likely that curious hackers are going to begin doing things that not even Google imagined was capable.

Google didn?t say anything about games when it introduced the device and instead focused on Chromecast?s video-playing features, but that didn?t prevent?Reddit user Brraaains?from immediately getting a Game Boy emulator running on his Chromecast.

Brraains posted a video of him playing a Game Boy game on his TV using the tiny Google media dongle. It?s just a proof of concept, but it works and opens up the possibility of other gaming-related functionality through the tiny HDMI stick.

The developer hosted a basic Game Boy emulator on a website and booted it up using his Chromecast extension for his PC?s Chrome browser. The code automatically began streaming to his television. He released the code on Github along with instructions on how to get the Game Boy emulator running on Chromecast.

It?s hard to see in the video ? especially with the cat in the way ? but the frame rate apparently dips in spots, but the developer claims he didn?t notice any lag between when he pushed the button and when he saw the corresponding action on the screen.

?From what I remember ? it was 2 a.m. ? it?s pretty instantaneous,? Brraaains wrote in a Reddit post. ?I?was surprised by how well it performed.?

This experiment also proves that it is a misnomer to call the Chromecast a ?streaming device? because it is capable of running code natively.

?The emulator is running on the Chromecast,? the developer wrote. ?The Chromecast executes the Javascript and HTML required to run the emulator. The client running on the PC just tells the emulator running on the Chromecast what to do. Go right, press A, or press B.?

It?s unlikely that anyone would want to play Game Boy games like this, but it just shows what is possible. A Chromecast only costs $35, so tons of developers are gonna have them and want to see what they are capable of. It?s interesting to see what is possible after only a few days.

APNewsBreak: Woman arrested in green paint vandalism at Washington National Cathedral

WASHINGTON ? A woman was arrested Monday after green paint was found splattered inside two chapels at the Washington National Cathedral, and police were investigating her in connection with two similar incidents on the National Mall, authorities said.

The woman was arrested inside the cathedral shortly after the paint was found, police and cathedral officials said. Investigators were hoping to question her about the vandalism on the Mall, including at the Lincoln Memorial, but a language barrier delayed the interrogation, Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said.

The woman would likely be charged with destruction of property, Newsham said.

Green paint was found early Friday morning on the Lincoln Memorial, and symbols were found painted in green later Friday on another statue on the Mall. The Lincoln Memorial was closed temporarily but reopened later Friday.

Officials at the cathedral discovered the paint inside two chapels Monday afternoon. It was still wet, which led them to believe the vandalism had just occurred. Officials called police immediately and closed the cathedral to visitors while authorities searched the grounds.

The paint was splashed onto an organ and on the floor inside the cathedral's historic Bethlehem Chapel on the basement level, officials said. It was also found inside Children's Chapel in the nave of the cathedral.

Also Monday, U.S. Park Police said green paint was found on the statue of Joseph Henry outside the headquarters of the Smithsonian Institution on the Mall. Henry was the Smithsonian's first secretary.

Meanwhile, crews continued working Monday to remove the paint from the Lincoln Memorial. The National Park Service said progressively stronger substances would be used until all the paint is gone, which could take several days. The memorial was scheduled to be power washed Tuesday.

Sgt. Paul Brooks, a U.S. Park Police spokesman, said it was too early to tell whether the same person was responsible for the vandalism at the two Mall landmarks. He noted that while the paint appeared to be splattered indiscriminately on the memorial, the statue appeared to have been deliberately painted. The symbols on the statue were not immediately decipherable.

D.C. police said paint from the cathedral would likely be sent to the FBI for testing.

Cleanup and restoration work at the cathedral was expected to cost $15,000, cathedral spokesman Richard Weinberg said. Crews were there late Monday, and events at the cathedral were going on as scheduled. Some of the paint was splattered onto the decorative wall behind the altar in the Children's Chapel, which has ornate wood carvings that required some restoration, Weinberg said.

Woman diagnosed with terminal cancer gets wedding of her dreams

Jen Bulik, a 35-year-old who recently was diagnosed with terminal cancer, got the wedding of her dreams over the weekend ? thanks in large part to the generosity of strangers.

More than 40 local vendors donated their services for the ceremony, which took place Saturday in San Jose, Calif.

Bulik and Jeff Lang, her boyfriend of six years, were married in a park near her parents' home. Surrounded by friends, family and a New Orleans brass band, the newlyweds led a parade to the reception, where 125 guests ate barbecue, played cornhole and watched the couple dance to an acoustic version of Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory."

"I avoided tearing up the entire day until I saw them dancing," Erica Ota, a Bay area wedding planner who donated her services for the event, told Yahoo News.

Bulik wore a light green dress for the exchange of vows and had several wigs on hand.

"Jen changed her outfits and wigs about four times during the event," James LeDeau, a friend of the couple, said. "A true trendsetter, she always kept us guessing."

Kristen Chappelle, another wedding guest, added: "I can't picture Jeff without Jen, and I can't picture Jen without Jeff. They are one."

Bulik was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in December. Despite aggressive treatment, the cancer spread to her lymph nodes, and doctors told her in June she has less than six months to live. Lang proposed earlier this month.

Ota launched an online "wedding wish" fund to cover additional wedding-related expenses, including Bulik's planned Hawaiian honeymoon. So far, they've raised more $47,000.

Sen. Feinstein on State of the Union calls for San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign

Today on CNN's State of the Union with Candy Crowley, Senator Dianne Feinstein spoke about embattled San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, calling for his resignation. Feinstein also weighed in on the latest clashes in Egypt, U.S.-Russia relations in light of Edward Snowden?s status, and her support for the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. Highlighted excerpts are below, and a full transcript is after the jump. Additional embeddable video will be posted at http://www.CNN.com/SOTU.

HIGHLIGHTED EXCERPTS:

ON THE LATEST CLASHES IN EGYPT:
FEINSTEIN: I think this is a real point of definition of what kind of Egypt is going to come out of this. And, for the first time, I am very concerned. I'm surprised that the military would urge people to go to the streets. They had to have known, if they do that, the other side is going to respond, and it became kind of a catalyst for violence. So, I don't think we know what kind of Egypt is going to emerge.

ON SUPPORTING JANET YELLEN AS THE NEXT FED CHAIR:
FEINSTEIN: Well, I was asked to sign and I signed, because I have met Janet Yellen on two occasions. I have followed her. She's very well thought of. She knows the fed, and she's very highly qualified. And I think a woman as head of the Federal Reserve, a qualified woman, would be a very positive thing for this administration.

ON EDWARD SNOWDEN:
FEINSTEIN: "I would be very hopeful that President Putin still would decide to turn him over. I suspect this sort of temporary amnesty or refugee status is to give Russia time to really consider what's in their best interests, and I think, if they think about it hard, what Snowden did, it's not in their best interests? I think that Obama really ought to sit down when he can with Putin and make the case.?

THIS IS A RUSH FDCH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CROWLEY: More than 70 demonstrators have been killed and more than a thousand injured this weekend in Egypt, all of it during clashes between the military installed government and its supporters versus backers of ousted President Mohamed Morsy.

In a written statement, secretary of state, John Kerry, said the United States urges an independent and impartial inquiry into the events of the last day and calls on all of Egypt's leaders across the political spectrum to act immediately to help their country take a step back from the brink.

Joining me now is California senator, Dianne Feinstein. Thank you for joining us this morning, senator.

FEINSTEIN: You're welcome.

CROWLEY: I just get the feeling that the U.S., despite these strong military contacts we hear all about the time between Egypt's military and the U.S. military, doesn't have a lot of sway in Egypt when you watch what's going on.

FEINSTEIN: Well, that may well be true, and I think this is a real point of definition of what kind of Egypt is going to come out of this. And, for the first time, I am very concerned. I'm surprised that the military would urge people to go to the streets. They had to have known, if they do that, the other side is going to respond, and it became kind of a catalyst for violence.

So, I don't think we know what kind of Egypt is going to emerge. I think it's very important for this new president and vice president to exert their authority now. It will show whether a democracy, in terms of civilian control of the military, can effectively govern that country. And so, the next few months, I think, are going to be real eye openers for the world.

CROWLEY: Senator, I just want to show a clip of recent what went on in the streets over the weekend. This is in Cairo, I believe. And again, we had more than 70 killed. We believe most of them killed by the military, which staged the coup of a democratically-elected president. As you know, when there is a coup of a democratically- elected leader, the U.S. generally can stop - stops aid. But here's what the spokesperson for the secretary of state said this week.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JEN PSAKI, STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESPERSON: The law does not require us to make a formal determination. That is a review that we have undergone as to whether a coup took place, and it is not in our national interests to make such a determination.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CROWLEY: So, if it made the determination there was a coup, we'd have to stop aid, and therefore, they're just not going to make a determination because anybody plainly looking at this would say it was a coup. What does that say to the people fighting on the streets of Cairo about the U.S. and its values?

FEINSTEIN: Oh, I'm not sure it says anything to them candidly. You know, the region historically has been - there've been many coups. I think the administration has been right. It has stopped the F-16s from being sold. I think we need to relook. We're right in the middle of the appropriations process now.

We have to relook at granting aid. I think the ball is in Egypt's court, and it's in the court of the President Mansour and the Vice President ElBaradei, and they have to step up, and they have to take over. Failing that ?

CROWLEY: Both were installed by the military.

FEINSTEIN: Failing that, I think you know what military will do now.

CROWLEY: Right. I mean, both those men that you mentioned who are now running Egypt were installed by the military.

FEINSTEIN: Well, that's one thing, but acting is another thing, and they have to be ?

CROWLEY: You want them to take charge of the military now?

FEINSTEIN: That's correct.

CROWLEY: Do you think they can?

FEINSTEIN: Well, we'll see. If they don't, they can't. If they do, they can.

CROWLEY: And if they don't, the U.S. needs to look at cutting off aid?

FEINSTEIN: Well, I think that may be the case.

CROWLEY: Let me move you to Russia, and Edward Snowden still in the airport, as far as we know, in Russia. The U.S. this week pushing very hard through the justice department saying, we're not going to torture him. He won't be subject to the death penalty. You need to hand him over. What are the chances that Russia's going to hand over Edward Snowden?

FEINSTEIN: Well, it's hard to tell. I know the president talked to President Putin. I would be very hopeful that President Putin still would decide to turn him over. I suspect this sort of temporary amnesty or refugee status is to give Russia time to really consider what's in their best interests, and I think, if they think about it hard, what Snowden did, it's not in their best interests.

And, Putin knows this. He's run the KGB. He knows what intelligence is comprised of. And, I think, to harbor this man is one of two things, one, we want to get hold of this stuff, or, two, we really want to take the time to figure this out as to whether we should return him to the United States.

CROWLEY: Do you think should Putin decide to grant him asylum in Russia, that the president ought to go ahead and go to the G-20 in St. Petersburg, that he has to go ahead and have a unilateral meeting with President Putin in September?

FEINSTEIN: Well, I think - don't think that's a way necessarily to show - not to go does anything. I think that Obama really ought to sit down when he can with Putin and make the case. Here's what this man did ?

CROWLEY: Do you think he should still go to Putin?

FEINSTEIN: Here's what this man did. By his own admission, he came to Booz Allen to be a contractor ?

(CROSSTALK)

FEINSTEIN: I meant Snowden, yes. With the purpose of going in there and taking as much material as he possibly could. He took much more than I could possibly think he could. It's very sensitive data. And then, he went and strategically placed it so that it could come out at different times.

Then, he went to two big cyber-intruding powers, China and Russia, and left China and went to Russia. You've got to ask why did he choose those two? You've got to also ask, do the Chinese have all this material? Do the Russians have it?

CROWLEY: Do we know?

FEINSTEIN: We don't know.

CROWLEY: Oh, OK.

FEINSTEIN: So, it's a very serious situation.

CROWLEY: Let me move you on to something else. You recently signed a letter urging the president to let Janet Yellen, who's currently number two at the Federal Reserve board, take over when Bernanke leaves. I want to play you just a little bit of my conversation With Treasury Secretary Lew, and I asked him about both Janet Yellen and Larry Summers, another name up for consideration.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LEW: Look, I know the people you've asked me about very well. They're both friends, and I have great admiration for both of them. I'm going to keep the conversation about any future decisions here where it belongs.

CROWLEY: Would they both make good fed chair?

LEW: I think they're both extraordinarily talented people.

CROWLEY: It's not exactly that they would both make a good fit?

LEW: I'm not going to comment on the fed.

(LAUGHTER)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CROWLEY: I'll ask you the same question, would either Yellen or Summers make a good fed chair?

FEINSTEIN: Yes. It's very hard for me to tell. Larry Summers had been very supportive of the era of deregulation, supporting derivatives and shorts and those kinds of thing. Janet Yellen has been close to Bernanke. I'm one that believes Bernanke has done a very good job. This country is moving ahead under partially Federal Reserve actions. And I think those ought to be continued for the foreseeable future. (CROSSTALK)

FEINSTEIN: I'm not pressuring him. I mean ?

(CROSSTALK)

FEINSTEIN: Well, I was asked to sign and I signed, because I have met Janet Yellen on two occasions. I have followed her. She's very well thought of. She knows the fed, and she's very highly qualified. And I think a woman as head of the Federal Reserve, a qualified woman, would be a very positive thing for this administration.

CROWLEY: I want to turn to San Diego, Mayor Bob Filner, as you know, there's been already a lawsuit against him, a number of women have come out and said that he sexually harassed them. He came out, basically said, yes, my behavior has been bad. I'm going to go into rehab for two weeks, but I'll still stay as mayor and look at, you know, city business in the morning and in the evening. Should this man resign?

FEINSTEIN: Well, I think he should. I think he should. Of all people, Bob Filner knows what public life is like. He served a time in the House. Being the mayor of a big city, you're a role model for people. You're either inspirational to people or you aren't. It's a very tough job. And I don't think that somebody who is lacking a moral compass really sets a role model or really will provide the kind of leadership that San Diegans want.

FEINSTEIN: This is up to them. This kind of absence of a moral compass is subject to recall. I suspect there will be recalls, and the people will judge.

CROWLEY: You think he should make it easier and resign?

FEINSTEIN: I think he should make it easier and resign, that's right.

CROWLEY: Thank you so much.

FEINSTEIN: Very welcome. Thank you.

CROWLEY: Senator Dianne Feinstein, come by any time. Thank you.

FEINSTEIN: Thank you.

It not only delivers astonishing, suspenseful footage that makes it a legitimate thriller, but also serves up thoughtful meditations about using wild animals for our own entertainment.

It's hard to imagine anyone coming out of this movie and not swearing off the next vacation trip to Orlando, San Antonio or San Diego.

Unfortunately, this feels like a ten-minute news segment blown up to theatrical proportions.

While Cowperthwaite's film opens with a simple question about the behavior of a single killer whale, it ends up mounting a persuasive ethical argument against keeping orcas in captivity.

"Blackfish" is no trumped up horror story fueled by Hollywood brand names and special effects. In this riveting documentary directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, all of the creatures are real, and all seem entitled to the serious chip on their shoulders.

The film may be depressing. But even with a terrible, watery musical score, it's also good.

Cowperthwaite juxtaposes to devastating effect official PR spin with news reports and eye-witness accounts of marine park tragedies.

[An] impressive, often gripping documentary ...

Engrossing when offers alarming CSI-type forensic analysis into the death of a whale trainer [but] the narrow focus on SeaWorld raises more questions that aren't considered.

Through interviews with whale scientists and several former Sea World trainers, [Cowperthwaite] paints a disturbing picture of the profit-minded climate of deceit that prevailed at the company.

Puts 'killer whales' into wildlife and humanitarian perspective while giving you all of the dangerous action sequences you could possible want. Free Willy, it ain't.

Blackfish marries biography, activism and psycho thriller into a pleasing cinematic shape, starting with a single whale and the trainers who worked with him.

Some of the archive footage is exceedingly harrowing, but the case against commercially condoned cruelty is made without sensationalism, and few will be able to watch this without a growing sense of outrage.

Cruelty begets cruelty and whales don't belong in the circus.

It is never less than gripping, and devastatingly undermines the notion of performing whales as wholesome family entertainment.

Damning and disturbing viewing.

It's a strong piece of video journalism in which images and the interviews deliver the information, and we reach our own conclusions.

A horrifying, heartbreaking eye-opener about human inhumanity to other intelligent and emotional beings who share our planet.

As horribly gripping as a serial-killer thriller, though the real villain is not the ostensible culprit, but its human captors.

An acclaimed and chastening documentary about what happens to human beings - injury, mutilation, death - when they pen orcas in sea parks.

Important, informative, imperfect.
