Britain's queen shakes hands with ex-IRA chief

BELFAST (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth shook the hand of former IRA guerrilla commander Martin McGuinness for the first time on Wednesday, drawing a line under a conflict that cost the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians, including that of her cousin.

The meeting with McGuinness, who is now the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, comes 14 years after the Irish Republican Army ended its war against British rule in the province, and is one of the last big milestones in a peace process whose success has been studied around the world.

The queen met McGuinness, Northern Ireland's Unionist first minister Peter Robinson and Irish President Michael D.Higgins for just under 10 minutes behind closed doors in a theatre in a leafy suburb of Belfast cordoned off by hundreds of police.

McGuinness shook the gloved hand of the queen a second time as she left the theatre, this time in front of television cameras, but unlike other guests chose not to bow his head.

The queen's bright green outfit appeared to have been chosen with Ireland's national color in mind, and McGuinness wished a smiling monarch well in Irish, saying "Slan agus beannacht", which he told her means "Goodbye and God speed".

There has been scattered opposition to the gesture of reconciliation from dissident Irish militants and from some of the IRA's victims. But the vast majority of the province's politicians backed the meeting, the first between the queen and a top member of the IRA or its former political wing, Sinn Fein.

"Today is a huge event and it is, in a sense, the ultimate handshake," John Reid, British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2001 to 2002, told the BBC.

"On all sorts of levels this is a hugely significant step but it is only one more step in a long process. This may take generations - to get back to absolute reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland."

OBSTACLE REMOVED

Ireland's president said the handshake was "something that had to be done" to remove an obstacle to reconciliation. Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said the gesture was symbolic but added that "the journey isn't near completion".

A few hours later, the queen waved to crowds from an open-topped car at a celebration of her Diamond Jubilee attended by over 20,000 people - a stark contrast to the armored limousines that have been a mandatory precaution on previous visits.

The queen regularly meets senior Unionist politicians, Protestants who want Northern Ireland to stay inside the United Kingdom, but not Sinn Fein - the largest party representing Catholic nationalists who want a united Ireland.

McGuinness is a hero to Republican hardliners, but has long been a hate figure to Unionists, many of whom harbor deep suspicions about his past.

He admits he was on the front line in the war with British forces, including on Bloody Sunday in 1972, when troops shot dead 13 unarmed protesters, but says he never killed anyone.

A British report said that McGuinness probably was armed with a submachinegun on Bloody Sunday, but did nothing to provoke the massacre. He has said he left the IRA in 1974, but most historians believe he was active for most of its campaign.

For the queen and her consort Prince Philip, who shook McGuinness's hand more cursorily, the conflict had a personal edge.

The queen's cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was also Philip's uncle, was killed by the IRA in 1979 with three others, including his 14-year-old grandson, when his boat was blown up while he was on holiday in Ireland.

More than 1,000 members of the British security forces were among 3,600 people killed during the 30 years of the "Troubles".

McGuinness told the queen that he agreed with comments she made last year that all victims of the conflict should be remembered, according to a source who was at the meeting.

"STILL A REPUBLICAN"

McGuinness said on Tuesday that, while he represented people who had been badly hurt by British state violence, he was also big enough to understand that the queen and other families in Britain had also lost loved ones.

Asked by reporters after the meeting if his convictions had changed, he said he was "still a Republican".

Sinn Fein, which has become increasingly popular south of the Irish border as the main party opposing an EU/IMF bailout, is keen to bolster its image as a mainstream party and distance itself from a violent past that alienates many southern voters.

It still wants a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of Britain, but in the short term its aim is to be in government in the north and south simultaneously.

Only last year, Sinn Fein rejected invitations to attend events during the queen's landmark visit to the Irish capital Dublin, the first by a British monarch since the republic won independence from Britain in 1921.

Some Republicans branded McGuinness a traitor for meeting a queen who is also commander-in-chief of Britain's armed forces.

"People are not unhappy that someone is shaking her hand, just not him. He's a hypocrite," said Martin, a 42-year-old unemployed man who said he and his friends had got criminal records defending their neighborhood in working-class Belfast.

"He sent people out to fight. To die. And now he's putting on a suit and shaking her hand? I don't want war (but) this shouldn't have happened till the next generation."

With splinter groups continuing to attack British targets, security forces say the risk of an attack is at its highest level since the Good Friday peace agreement was signed in 1998.

Nine police suffered minor injuries on Tuesday night when they were pelted with petrol bombs and other missiles.

How To Improve The Value Of Your Home Through Home ...

A bare wall inside an entryway or foyer makes a perfect place to build a small mudroom. Install coat hooks, a bench, and hang some framed photos to add visual interest to the unused space, and you may find that your family gets out of the house faster by having shoes, mittens, and jackets at hand and ready to go.

If you are in need of a home improvement project, consider an extension on your home. Extensions can be added to the exterior or the interior of your home and expand on space you already have but aren?t using. For example, loft spaces can be created out of rooms with cathedral ceilings, or a finished attic can act as an extra bedroom.

When it comes to home improvement, consider adding extra insulation to your home to assist with your cooling costs in the summer and heating costs in the winter. This will save you money as well as keep you and your family more comfortable. The two best ways to insulate are to add weather strips to your doors and ensure that your attic is lined.

To increase energy efficiency and save significantly on your utility bills, consider replacing single pane windows with newer energy efficient ones. The investment you make in new windows now will easily pay for itself over time as your utility bills will be lower and, of course, your home will be more comfortable.

Here?s a simple way of fixing gaps at the bottom of poorly fitted interior doors. Sandwich a section of timber (cut to the width of the door) between two pieces of paneling. Leave each piece of paneling sticking out beyond the upper side of the two by two by about one inch. Slip the extension over the bottom of the door and screw each piece of paneling into place against each side of the door.

In any home improvement project involving brick, purchasing extra bricks is a very wise investment. When repairs or additions must be made to brick work, it can be surprisingly difficult to match new bricks to the color and texture of the originals. Brick styles change regularly. A store of surplus bricks bought with the originals ? as many as can be reasonably bought and stored ? will take the difficulty out of future brick-matching.

One of the easiest improvements you can make to your dining room is by installing a dimmer light switch. This allows you to adjust the levels of lighting according to the desired atmosphere of your dining experience; dim the light for a soft, romantic dinner for two, or brighten the room for a festive holiday dinner.

Remember that updating your home is going to increase its value a great deal. If you are trying to decide on a home improvement project, you want to choose updates that are needed and those that are most common. This will increase the value of your home, helping you to sell it much faster if you decide to do so in the future.

These ideas are just a sampling of the vast home improvement resources out there. You should keep learning to get the most out of your home improvement efforts. Ahead-of-time research can make the difference between a successful home improvement project and a poor one. Make sure you have a thorough understanding of the next project you tackle.

NBA star?s gay slur shows pros don?t know Twitter

By Bob Sullivan

All winter long, New York Knicks star player Amar?e Stoudemire plays in front of packed basketball arenas. Often, when on the road, he must stand on the foul line and hit critical shots while ignoring taunts screamed at him by 20,000 or more enemy fans.?

So why couldn't he ignore one comparatively tame tweet from a Knicks fan critical of his play?

Stoudemire is the latest professional athlete to land in social media hot water after he replied privately on Twitter this weekend to the fan. In just 140 characters, he managed to squeeze in two words we won't publish on msnbc.com, including one hateful gay slur: ?"F#&# you.? I don't have to do anything, F#@."

The recipient took a screen capture of the private direct message and posted it publicly. Within hours, a typical Internet firestorm ensued. The NBA now says it is investigating.

The fan, who identifies himself as 19 years old on his Twitter account, loves the Knicks so much he uses the team logo as his background image. But he's not innocent.? He taunted Stoudemire, who he says is one of his favorite players, by urging him to "come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season" -- nothing wrong there -- but closed the note like this: "mannnnnn deadasss!!!"

While no one wants to be in the business of ranking foul language, clearly Stoudemire upped the ante with his response.? Literally and figuratively, Stoudemire should have been the bigger man.

The fan has declined interviews, saying, "I don't want to make this situation any bigger than it is," a mature response that Stoudemire could easily have employed this weekend.

It's time professional athletes realized that social media is a lot bigger than they think it is.

Stoudemire's Twitter transgression is hardly the first, and it won't be the last.? It is, however, shocking that an athlete being paid more than $20 million annually could be thrown off his game so easily.? And it's almost unbelievable that professional sports teams that spend hundreds of millions of dollars crafting their image leave so much to chance on Twitter and Facebook.

It's not as if the sports leagues can't control social media usage -- the National Basketball Association prohibits players from Tweeting 45 minutes before games, during games, and after games until media leave the locker room. Other leagues have similar restrictions.?

Still, Twitter regret is a fixture in the sports world. Then Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was fined last season for complaining about umpires on Twitter. Several NFL players were criticized for saying they were enjoying the NFL lockout last summer. And NBA pariah Gilbert Arenas was fined after he tweeted that he would be "direct sexting in no time" last year.

Stoudemire's direct response to a fan raised the stakes however. ?His casual use of a gay slur also shows just how far the NBA has to go to make its environment accepting of all sexual orientations.? The NBA might look to the NHL for inspiration; last year, the hockey league joined the impressive "You Can Play" initiative after a team general manager's son became the first openly gay player in the minor leagues.? The player, Brendan Burke, died in a car crash in 2010.

In addition to the offensive language, it's amazing that some athletes fail to prepare for the reputation risk which comes from social media, and that professional leagues haven't managed to control it. The contrast with college sports here is stark; across the country, many colleges are trying to ban athletes from using social media, or hiring technology companies to monitor them closely.?

This approach has raised serious First Amendment issues, but it at least shows the schools are taking the risks seriously.

There is a distinct difference, however, when a professional sports team pays an athlete millions of dollars as part of a profit-making venture. Schools shouldn?t force teenage lacrosse players off Facebook, and they probably don?t have the right to such a free speech restriction, but a pro team can surely control how its highly compensated employee interacts with the public. ?

The Twitter regret issue should be interesting to watch during the upcoming London Olympic games, where a combination of highly paid professionals and amateurs, along with very excited family members, might lead to some embarrassing social media moments. Already, famous British swimmer and former silver medalist Sharron Davies is calling for a Twitter blackout by U.K. athletes during the games.

?It?s always something that is a bit of a risk, that some silly story would overshadow the good stuff we were doing,? Davies told the Mirror. ?For that short period, a month, let?s not take a risk.?

For his part, Stoudemire did apologize, seemingly without prompting, several hours later.

"I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won't happen again," he wrote in another private message posted by the recipient.

Stoudemire had a frustrating, injury-riddled season that ended with him embarrassingly punching a glass door after a playoff loss to eventual league champion Miami Heat. Angry punches and glass don't mix well. The resulting injury caused Stoudemire to miss a playoff game and limited him for the rest of the series.

Frustration and the instant gratification of social media are an even more toxic mixture. If someone paid me $20 million a year, I'd pay for 24/7 public relations help with my Twitter account.? Seems a sensible way to keep the fouls on the court.

Sun exposure and cutaneous HPV infection found synergistic in skin cancers

Monday, June 25, 2012

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg have found that having antibodies for cutaneous types of human papillomavirus (HPV), coupled with sun exposure (ultraviolet radiation) or poor tanning ability, can act "synergistically" in the development of non-melanoma skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

A number of studies into the relationship between cutaneous HPV and sun exposure have been conducted previously but with mixed results, the researchers said.

This study, the first to investigate interaction effects between genus-specific cutaneous HPV positivity and multiple measures of sunlight exposure as related to BCC and SCC in a U.S. population, was published in a recent issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"UV radiation exposure is the most important risk factor for the development of non-melanoma skins cancer," said study lead author Dana E. Rollison, Ph.D., Moffitt associate member, vice president and chief health information officer. "Cases of non-melanoma skin cancers are increasing despite the increased use of sunscreen products. Thus, so that new interventions can be developed, there is a need to identify co-factors that may interact with UV radiation exposure in increasing the skin cancer risk."

According to the authors, the risk factors for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are male sex; age; light skin, eyes and hair; and UV radiation exposure.

UV radiation exposure and light skin pigmentation are the most recognized risk factors. People with low melanin production tend to have difficulty tanning when exposed to UV radiation.

Skin pigmentation, created by chemical melanin production in the skin, is the "main photoprotective mechanism in the skin," noted the researchers.

The researchers hypothesized that persistent HPV infection may promote tumor progression by interfering with an individual's response to UV radiation-induced DNA damage and that HPV plays a synergistic role in the development of BCC and SCC. Accordingly, their goal was to investigate the potential "modifying effects of cutaneous HPV seroreactivity on the associations between sunlight exposure, host susceptibility to UV radiation exposure, and both BCC and SCC."

The study recruited 204 patient volunteers with BCC, 156 with SCC, and 297 controls with no reported cancer types. The three groups were surveyed on demographics, personal constitutional characteristics, lifestyle factors and measurements of sunlight exposure. Each volunteer provided a blood sample for cutaneous HPV antibody measurement.

"Sun-related factors were associated with BCC and SCC," Rollison said. "Cutaneous sensitivity to sunlight exposure - specifically experiencing a blistering sunburn - and poor tanning ability were associated with a higher prevalence of antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genus beta. The associations between poor tanning ability and SCC were significantly greater among those positive for antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genera alpha and beta."

Additional studies are needed, including those measuring infection with cutaneous HPV types in multiple genera, concluded the researchers.

"Identifying how HPV infections might influence sunlight-associated risks of NMSC may lead to improved identification of high-risk individuals and also aid in the development of new prevention strategies," Rollison said.

Thousands march for gay pride in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Loud sirens, flashing lights and countless rainbow flags and banners accompanied uniformed police officers, cheerleaders and politicians who marched in San Francisco's gay pride parade Sunday, the 42nd year the city has celebrated the lesbian, gay and transgender community.

More than 200 floats made their way down Market Street, the city's main thoroughfare. A few marchers were dressed in elaborate, brightly colored outfits made from balloons, while many other participants and parade watchers wore hardly anything.

Angel Nava, 19, of Sacramento, Calif., wearing just a pair of skimpy orange-colored shorts, stood with his arms crossed, apparently chilled, but still in good humor.

"I think all these people are beautiful," he said.

Mayor Ed Lee was set to speak at the city's Civic Center ? near the parade's end-point ? later Sunday. He'll appear not far from where gay rights activist and San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk famously addressed gay pride celebrants more than 30 years ago.

Organizers said San Francisco's weekend events are the largest LGBT gathering in the nation, but thousands were also celebrating in Chicago and New York City, where parade-goers are toasting the anniversary of the state's same-sex marriage law.

In Chicago, large crowds gathered on the city's North Side, with many saying it was time for Illinois to allow gay marriage. Sunday's parade comes just weeks after 25 Illinois couples sued for the right to marry.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez have refused to defend the lawsuit, saying the state's gay marriage ban violates the constitution. Gay marriage opponents have said they're strategizing over how to intervene.

Last year, several floats were vandalized before the parade began. Chicago police said there have been no reports of trouble.

New York's march exuded diversity, from grand marshal Cyndi Lauper to the mayor, the police commissioner and the governor.

"New York is a place where you can do whatever you want to do," Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared before he joined the Fifth Avenue parade at noon.

He said he had a message for the rest of America: "The government should get out of your personal life."

Hundreds of thousands of spectators crowded sidewalks a dozen deep, cheering and waving rainbow-colored flags for the annual festivities one year after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the Marriage Equality Act into law.

The governor appeared Sunday with his girlfriend, Food Network chef Sandra Lee.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn came as a newlywed, married last month to longtime partner Kim Catullo.

"A year ago, I was walking with my fiancee," Quinn said. "Today, I'm marching with my wife, my father and the mayor."

San Francisco's parade came a day after a smaller march in the city's Dolores Park and the so-called "Pink Saturday" street party.

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown waved as he rode by in a yellow convertible. A jail bus, adorned with rainbow banners, blared its siren and flashed its lights.

The Gay Asian Pacific Alliance, LGBT for Obama, Out4 Immigration and Marriage Equality USA were among the marchers. Two men, marching hand-in-hand and waving a sign that read "Frank and Joe, 12 Years Together," received a warm cheer from the crowded sidewalks.

Jeff Haas said he and his wife, Susie, have been coming to watch the parade since 1968, missing only a few years in between.

"I'm really proud of the city and I think it's wonderful that we continue to celebrate this," Susie Haas said.

Refugees seeking life in Australia feared drowned

Scott Fisher / Getty Images

People rescued after their boat capsized north of Australia arrive at Christmas Island Friday.

Officials in Australia said 109 people had been rescued after a boat carrying refugees apparently fleeing life in Afghanistan capsized more than 120 miles north of Christmas Island, but warned it was looking "increasingly grim" for up to 100 other people still in the water.

Merchant and navy ships and five aircraft were involved in the search for survivors a day after a crowded boat turned over far from land in the Indian Ocean. A 13-year-old boy was among those rescued.

However planes flying over the area spotted a number of bodies in the water.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare told Sky News Australia that people "should brace for more bad news" on the number of dead, The Australian newspaper reported.

"No good news... I can't report that (surveillance aircraft) have seen people alive in the water at this point in time," Clare added. "This is looking increasingly grim by the hour,'' he told Macquarie Radio.

He said the ocean was "pretty rough," but added "we are still in that critical window" for the rescue operation, The Australian said.

Clare said everyone on board the boat appeared to be from Afghanistan.

Authorities in Australia believe the boat started its journey in Indonesia, not Sri Lanka, as initially suggested by some in Indonesia, The Australian reported.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, attending the United Nations Rio summit in Brazil, told reporters that "details are sketchy, but what is apparent is that there has been a large loss of life at sea."

'Perilous journeys'
Sky News Australia reported that the United Nations High Commission for Refugees had called on Australia to find safer ways for asylum seekers to seek protection.

The UNHCR said the boat's capsizing "reinforces the need for renewed international solidarity and cooperation to find protection options for people that would help to reduce the need for these perilous journeys by boat."

"UNHCR calls on Australia and countries in the region to redouble their efforts to provide safer and more secure options for people to find protection other than through these dangerous and exploitative boat journeys," it added in a statement.

Fears for 200 refugees as boat capsizes north of Australia

Refugees are a hot political issue in Australia. So far this year, more than 50 boats carrying more than 4,000 people have been detected by Australian authorities.

Refugees seeking asylum in Australia often set sail from Indonesia heading for Australia's Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island in dangerous and overcrowded boats, with the help of people smugglers.

In December 2011, up to 200 died when an overcrowded boat sank off the coast of East Java.

In 2010, 50 asylum seekers died when their boat was thrown onto rocks at Christmas Island. In 2001, a crowded boat known as the SIEV X sank on its way to Australia with the loss of 350 lives.

What Siri Says About Improving Your Relationship | World of ...

What Siri Says About Improving Your RelationshipWhen I upgraded to an iPhone 4s I had no idea what to expect from Siri, or how she would actually help manage my busy life.

Over the past couple of months I?ve grown to appreciate Siri?s suggestions, assistance, and dry sense of humor. While she occasionally misunderstanding my requests, I can?t fault her entirely. I have to take responsibility for my part in our communication breakdowns. So, I?m working on clear diction and stating my requests more concisely (which my husband is thrilled about).

Even after two months of daily communication, Siri still has her guard up. She always deflects questions about her gender (she sure sounds like a woman), her marital status, her family life, and her dreams for the future.

I can?t help but wondered if she has has an avoidant attachment style due to childhood trauma or something. Maybe she just has very strong boundaries when it comes to work relationships ? she doesn?t mix personal and business.

In spite of her reluctance to open up emotionally, she often catches me off guard offering profound nuggets of relationship advice which cause me to reflect on my life and relationships.

Here are just a few of Siri?s gems of wisdom.

1. Don?t be afraid to ask for clarification.
2. Focus on what really matters to you.
3. Find joy in other?s successes.
4. Be open to new possibilities in your relationships.
5. Be ready and willing to offer help.
6. Don?t react. When you?re caught off guard, take time to respond.
7. Keep your word and do what you?ve promised to do.
8. Remember that you don?t have to have all of the answers.
9. Validate other?s feelings and point of view (and call them by name frequently during conversations).
10. Show caring and concern without trying to control their behavior.
11. Readily accept compliments with enthusiasm.
12. Focus on the positives in your life.
13. Listen more than you talk.
14. Think before you speak.
15. Appreciate what you have.
Now, I?m going to add my own final relationship tip?wait, I learned this from Siri, too!

US plans significant military presence in Kuwait

(AP) ? A congressional report says the United States is planning a significant military presence of 13,500 troops in Kuwait to give it the flexibility to respond to sudden conflicts in the region.

The study by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee examined the U.S. relationship with the six nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council ? Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The Associated Press obtained the report in advance of Tuesday's release. It comes as the Middle East deals with the demands of the Arab Spring, the end to U.S. combat operations in Iraq at the end of 2011 and fears of Iran's nuclear program.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said he envisions about 40,000 troops stationed in the Middle East region after the withdrawal from Iraq.

The annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting brings a wealth of scientific minds to the shores of Germany?s Lake Constance. Every summer at Lindau, dozens of Nobel Prize winners exchange ideas with hundreds of young researchers from around the world. Whereas the Nobelists are the marquee names, the younger contingent is an accomplished group in its own right. In advance of this year?s meeting, which focuses on physics, we are profiling several promising attendees under the age of 30. The profile below is the 14th in a series of 30.

Name: Ioannis Florakis
Age: 29
Born: Athens, Greece
Nationality: Greek

Current position: Postdoctoral researcher, Max Planck Institute for Physics and Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich, Germany
Education: Bachelor?s degree from the University of Athens, master's and doctoral degrees from Ecole Normale Sup?rieure (University of Paris)

What is your field of research?
My research focuses in the field of theoretical high-energy physics and, in particular, superstring theory.

What drew you to physics, and to that research area in particular?
I would say that, since a very young age, I had an inherently curious spirit. It was precisely this intrinsic desire to understand ?how things work? that drew my attention to physics and mathematics. In particular, I can remember spending my final years before high school graduation struggling to read books on higher mathematics, so that I would apply this knowledge to physical problems. The pleasure gained from the satisfaction of ?finding things out? was what made me realize this is the road I would pursue in life. I should also add that a very important element that helped trigger my passion for theoretical physics was my constant impression that high school textbooks were often filled with oversimplifying arguments that I rarely considered satisfactory. My specific choice of research domain (theoretical physics and, in particular, string theory) was largely motivated by the conviction that, despite their apparent complexity, physical phenomena can actually be described in terms of a small set of fundamental principles (i.e. symmetries), which can in turn be re-cast into precise mathematical form.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
It is hard to make predictions about the future, though I certainly aspire to continue contributing to the scientific community. One of the problems that I consider fundamentally important is the study of thermodynamics in the extreme high temperature regime, within the framework of an ultraviolet-complete theory that contains gravity, such as string theory. It appears that various theoretical problems arise in such regimes, where the energy (or curvature) approaches the Planck (or string) scale, the scale where the effects of quantum gravity are expected to dominate. There is also evidence that the correct understanding of string theory in the high-temperature (or high-curvature) regime may provide answers to some of the long-standing problems of cosmology and, in particular, the initial singularity problem. It seems that part of the difficulty of analyzing string thermodynamics in such setups is due to the absence of mathematical techniques adapted for such calculations. My current research essentially aims to develop techniques that will hopefully help treat this long-standing problem.

Who are your scientific heroes?
There are several scientists whose work and, sometimes, whose approach to science and life in general I deeply admire. I could mention, for example, Werner Heisenberg, Paul Dirac, Richard Feynman and Eugene Wigner.

What activities outside of physics do you most enjoy?
One of my favorite musical instruments is the piano, which I have played since an early age. I also have a special interest in listening to classic music records and films.

What do you hope to gain from this year?s Lindau meeting?
Attending the Lindau Nobel meetings is a unique opportunity for any young scientist to meet and discuss with some of the pioneers of the field and profit from their deep physical insight. Personally, I believe that events such as the Lindau meeting help provide a source of considerable inspiration for a young scientist?s work. In this sense, the Lindau experience is unique, in that it permits an interaction of young researchers with the fathers of the field. I am certain that the discussions will influence my own views and ideas in a way beneficial to my research. In addition, it will also provide an excellent opportunity for me to meet and interact with other young researchers.

Are there any Nobelists whom you are particularly excited to meet or learn from at Lindau?
David Gross and Martinus Veltman are two of the Nobelists that will be present in Lindau this year and whom I am particularly looking forward to meeting. Their deep and important contributions to perturbative and non-perturbative quantum field theory and theoretical physics, in general, are well-known and now constitute standard textbook material. It will be a rare occasion for me to meet them in person.

Study improves understanding of surface molecules in controlling size of gold nanoparticles

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? North Carolina State University researchers have shown that the "bulkiness" of molecules commonly used in the creation of gold nanoparticles actually dictates the size of the nanoparticles -- with larger so-called ligands resulting in smaller nanoparticles. The research team also found that each type of ligand produces nanoparticles in a particular array of discrete sizes.

"This work advances our understanding of nanoparticle formation, and gives us a new tool for controlling the size and characteristics of gold nanoparticles," says Dr. Joseph Tracy, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research. Gold nanoparticles are used in industrial chemical processes, as well as medical and electronics applications.

The bulkier the ligand, the fewer ligands can sit side-by-side -- leading to a smaller nanoparticle.

When creating gold nanoparticles, scientists often use organic molecules called ligands to facilitate the process. The ligands effectively bring gold atoms together in a solution to create the nanoparticles. In the process, ligands essentially line up side by side and surround the nanoparticles in all three dimensions.

The researchers wanted to see whether the bulkiness of the ligands affected nanoparticle size, and opted to assess three types of thiol ligands -- a family of ligands commonly used to synthesize gold nanoparticles. Specifically, the molecules bound to the gold nanoparticles are linear hexanethiolate (-SC6), cyclohexanethiolate (-SCy) and 1-adamantanethiolate (-SAd). Each of these ligands has a bulkier configuration than the last.

For example, picture each ligand as a slice of pie, with a gold atom attached to the pointed end. -SC6 looks like a very narrow slice of pie. -SCy is slightly larger, and -SAd is the largest of the three -- with the "crust" end of the pie wedge far wider than the pointed end.

The researchers found that the bulkiness of the ligands determined the size of the nanoparticles. Because fewer -SAd and -SCy ligands can line up next to each other in three dimensions, fewer gold atoms are brought together in the core. Therefore, the nanoparticles are smaller. -SC6, the least bulky of the thiolates, can create the largest nanoparticles.

"While we've shown that this is an effective means of controlling size in gold nanoparticles, we think it may have implications for other materials as well," says Peter Krommenhoek, a Ph.D. student at NC State and lead author of the paper. "That's something we're exploring."

But the researchers made another interesting finding as well.

When particularly small nanoparticles form, they tend to form at very specific sizes, called discrete sizes. For instance, some types of nanoparticles may consist of 25 or 28 atoms -- but never 26 or 27 atoms.

In this study, the researchers found that the bulkiness of the ligands also changed the discrete sizes of the nanoparticles. "This is interesting, in part, because each discrete size represents a different number of gold atoms and ligands," Tracy says, "which could influence the nanoparticle's chemical behavior. That question has yet to be addressed."

(AP) ? The battle over Gov. Scott Walker's agenda has attracted millions of dollars from out of state, campaign volunteers from across the country and months of concentrated attention from the two major political parties.

But on Tuesday, the only voices that matter will be those of Wisconsin voters deciding whether to keep Walker or fire him and hand his job to the Milwaukee mayor. After more than a year in the national spotlight, both sides are preparing for a razor-thin margin.

Polls show Walker, a Republican just 17 months into his term, with a small lead over Democrat Tom Barrett.

"You know what distresses me?" state Sen. Mark Miller said to a group of Democratic volunteers last week in Madison. "It's close. It's so darn close."

During Monday's first campaign stop, Walker said he expects a close race, too, and he's focused on turning out voters who supported his efforts to take on public-employee unions.

"We want to move on and move forward," Walker said at a plastics plant near Madison. He was joined by his wife, Tonette, who wore a button that read "Luv My Gov."

Walker planned other campaign stops at a brewery in Stevens Point and a distillery in Green Bay before wrapping up with a nighttime rally in Milwaukee.

Barrett was spending most of Monday in western and northern Wisconsin before ending his day with a rally at a United Auto Workers union hall in Kenosha.

Walker is only the third governor in U.S. history to face a recall vote. The other two lost, most recently California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003. Wisconsin's recall election is a rematch of the 2010 governor's race in which Walker defeated Barrett by 5 percentage points.

Walker's lieutenant governor, Rebecca Kleefisch, and three Republican state senators also face recall votes Tuesday. In addition, voters will fill a fourth state Senate seat after the Republican incumbent resigned rather than face the recall.

Anger over Walker and his conservative agenda began building almost as soon as he took office in January 2011. Just a month into his term, Walker took the state by surprise with a proposal to effectively end collective bargaining rights for most state workers. The recall idea emerged soon thereafter.

But the recall petition drive couldn't officially start until November, months after Walker signed the union changes into law. Organizers hit the streets a week before Thanksgiving and spent two months gathering more than 900,000 signatures ? about 360,000 more than were needed to trigger the election.

Retired teacher Jan Stebbins cast her ballot early for Barrett, just as she did two years ago. She said she's been offended by Walker, not by what he's done but "how he's done it."

Stebbins can't stand the division that's emerged in the past two years.

By Wednesday morning, she hopes the state "gets back to a little bit more unity," she said. "I don't know what will happen."

Todd Schober, a financial planner from Racine, voted for Walker in 2010 and plans to do so again on Tuesday.

"When is this going to end?" he asked after shaking his head and sighing. "I'm just going to be so glad when it's all over."

Walker, the 44-year-old son of a minister, has remained unflappable throughout the campaign just as he was during the massive protests that raged at the Statehouse for weeks as lawmakers debated his proposal.

Along the way, he's become a star among Republicans and the most successful fundraiser in Wisconsin politics, collecting at least $31 million from around the country since taking office. That obliterated his fundraising record of $11 million from 2010.

About $63 million has been spent on the race so far, including $16 million from conservative groups such as the Republican Governors Association, Americans for Prosperity and the National Rifle Association.

Democratic groups ? including those funded by unions, the Democratic Governors Association and the Democratic National Committee ? have poured in about $14 million, based on a tally from the government watchdog group the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

The majority of Walker's donations have come from people outside Wisconsin. Most of Barrett's $4.2 million came from inside the state.

The race has implications for national labor unions. It's also seen as a proxy fight for the presidential election, especially given the importance of Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes.

President Barack Obama has kept his distance, just as he did during the unrest last year. Other prominent Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton, campaigned for Barrett in the week leading up to the vote.

White House press secretary Jeff Carney was asked during a briefing Monday why Obama wasn't campaigning for Barrett.

"The president supports him, stands by him," Carney said, adding that Obama hopes Barrett prevails.

Walker enlisted the support of several prominent national Republicans, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, an unabashed union hater.

A Marquette University Law School poll released last week showed Walker with a narrow 7-percentage point lead over Barrett, 52 percent to 45 percent. The poll's margin of error was 4.1 percentage points. In the same poll two weeks earlier, Walker held a 6-point lead, 50 percent to 44 percent.

The poll also showed the deep division in Wisconsin, where 39 percent of respondents said they liked the job Walker has done and 38 percent said they did not like it. Twenty-one percent said they like what he's done, just not how he did it.

In the days leading up to the election, they expressed a mixture of anticipation and fatigue with the political turmoil.

In the working-class city of Janesville, signs on both sides of the election were scattered across the community, some just a few feet apart.

Retired businessman Dave Flury plans to support Walker. And he's worried about what will happen if Barrett wins.

"If Walker loses, shouldn't Republicans turn right around and recall Barrett?" Flury asked.

For months, voters have been inundated with telephone calls, campaign mail and television advertising. Barrett supporter John Oehrke is ready for all of it to end.

"It doesn't really matter who wins I guess," Oehrke said. "It's all crazy.

3 Critical Currency Trading Tools | Finance Action Time

Posted on June 4th, 2012

Every forex trading platform will incorporate different tools to help a forex trader become successful. Three of the most important currency trading tools include 1) a demo version to help you assess the platform, 2) regular forex technical analysis, live streaming of data and price quotes, and 3) charting capability to give a forex trader the data he needs to make an informed decision. Each of these currency trading tools is important in its own right, but combined, they can help you become a successful forex trader in the shortest amount of time. It is therefore highly recommended to check for the availability of these tools before choosing your forex broker.

1) The Demo

Whether you?re a new trader or you?ve been in the currency trading business for a while, you will surely understand that practice makes perfect. Practice is even better when you?re not using your own money to fund trading errors made as a result of lack of knowledge and understanding of how the trading platform operates. Let?s face it, forex trading is a complex business to begin with; you will want a trading platform that takes all the hassle and stress out of making trades. If you?ve got access to a trading demo, make good use of it, discover all of its capabilities and learn its limitations, play with it until it feels comfortable. Trading on the demo platform must become second-nature, because trading in the real world leaves little room for error.

2) Streaming Data

Granted, forex trading isn?t done on an exchange like stocks and commodities, but the forex market is also never closed. And forex traders want and need the ability to see real time data, i.e., pair pricing, in order to make an informed decision. Streaming real time data also ensures that you maintain full and complete control of your funding account and trades.

3) Charting Package Capabilities

A good charting software program will provide you with more precise calculations, and give you the option of various trading periods, including ones on a very short scale (such as a 4-hour chart) or over a much longer period of time (even out to several years). The benefit of the chart is it gives forex traders an appreciation and understanding of forex technical analysis. From that, the application of this important currency trading tool will allow the forex trader to reasonably predict price movements and develop the appropriate strategy.

There?s no question that the forex market is complicated ? but the right tools will help traders at all level find profitable positions and to develop confidence in their forex trading skills.

But in an update provided last week, key researchers confided they may never find a link between a high rate of fatal mesothelioma and the taconite iron ore industry ? that the high rate of mesothelioma deaths may have been caused by exposure long ago and far away.

?It could be we don?t see any relationship to the workplace,? said Jeff Mandel, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota?s School of Public Health and the lead researcher in the study.

But researchers in the nearly $5 million Minnesota Taconite Workers Health Study quickly added that they haven?t reached that conclusion yet and are working to see where and how Rangers may have been exposed to asbestos or asbestos-like fibers that are the only known cause of the always fatal mesothelioma.

On Thursday, researchers revealed that the study already has confirmed a 300 percent higher rate of mesothelioma on the Iron Range than the general population in Minnesota.

Thursday?s update, the first since October, also reported that Rangers have about 20 percent more lung cancer and 11 percent more heart disease than the general population.

Yet while lung cancer can be caused by smoking and heart disease from bad eating habits and obesity, mesothelioma can come only from exposure to certain kinds of airborne fibers.

Researchers said they simply aren?t finding many, if any, of the traditional asbestos-size mineral fibers in their study. So now they are focusing on shorter fibers. Once called ?asbestos-like fibers,? researchers are now calling them ?elongated mineral particles? because they are not truly asbestos.

Some Rangers have speculated that the lung disease killing their cohorts comes from the minerals in the rock released by the process of mining low-grade iron ore and processing it into taconite pellets. Researchers continue to look at that, but say it?s possible the exposure came from previous jobs, such as in the ship building industry or onboard asbestos-laden Navy ships, or handling asbestos molds or insulation while working in taconite plants.

Meanwhile, a health screening of current and retired taconite workers found that 17 percent had reduced lung capacity and about the same had abnormalities on tissue around the lung. It?s not clear, however, if those problems are from smoking, dust exposure or other issues.

At least 82 Iron Rangers have died in recent years from mesothelioma, which often doesn?t appear until 30 to 40 years after initial exposure to asbestos fibers.

It?s estimated about 80,000 workers have been involved in mining since the first operations began in Minnesota in the late 1800s. Researchers are focusing on the roughly 46,000 people born since 1920 who worked in the production of taconite, which has been mined and processed in Minnesota since the 1950s.

The health study, headed by the University of Minnesota?s School of Public Health and funded by the 2008 Minnesota Legislature, has five distinct parts:

? An occupational exposures assessment to determine how and where the asbestos or shorter particles came from.

? A mortality study to determine the cause of death for thousands of deceased taconite workers.

? A cancer incidence study to see whether lung cancer rates are higher on the Iron Range.

? An environmental study of current airborne particulates to check for asbestos levels in taconite plants and in local cities.

? And a respiratory health study of living taconite workers and their spouses.

All of the field work has been completed and now scientists are crunching their numbers. All of the data analysis will be peer reviewed before it?s released.

Bob Brown, safety chairman for United Steelworkers of America Local 2750 at Hibbing Taconite, who serves on the health study?s advisory committee, said Thursday?s update was good but steelworkers are still awaiting the results with trepidation.

?It seems like they are doing a very thorough job. I think people are satisfied that they are at least taking this serious this time,? said Brown, 56. ?But people are worried. They want to know if they are going to have some golden years after they retire or if they are just going to get sick. I?ve got 24 years in at HibTac and 35 years in the mining game. ? I?m concerned where this (lung disease) is coming from.?

Brown said he was encouraged to hear that the study also is looking at the relatively high exposure to silica in taconite operations as a possible health concern.

Results from each part of the study will be made public when completed, with more results later this year and a final, overall report expected in 2013.
