The War on Jesus: Universities Nationwide Snub ... - Education News

by Jennifer Kabbany - Nevermind the War on Christmas ? what about the War on Jesus Christ?

Universities across America show an outright disregard and disdain for Jesus Christ, a survey by The College Fix finds.

A look at hundreds of religious studies classes at universities across the nation?uncovered that, for the most part, professors prefer to snub the subject of who Jesus was and what he preached. Classes that are focused on Christianity, meanwhile, tip-toe around or altogether avoid the topic of Christ?s teachings.

Jesus Christ is ? without question ? the most influential figure to ever walk the Earth, but professors clearly prefer to offer electives on much more obscure matters, the survey found.

The survey looked at class titles and descriptions categorized either directly under religious studies, or courses heavy with religious topics but filed under departments such as history, the humanities, political science or philosophy.

Of the 316 classes surveyed, only three focused exclusively on Jesus, compared to:

2 classes on witchcraft and shamanism;

2 classes on yoga and meditation;

3 classes on sex and religion;

3 classes on death and afterlife beliefs;

4 classes on religion and doubt/various conflicts;

5 classes on science and religion;

5 classes on mysticism;

12 classes on women/gender and religion; and

14 classes on religion and culture.

Some of the electives are too difficult to even classify, such as: emergence, from biology to religion; suffering and transformation; anthropology of body and pain; religious dimensions in human experience; sport and spirituality; and a history of apocalyptic thought and movements.

University of Colorado at Denver?s 40-plus religious studies classes include ?whores and saints,? ?theories of the universe,? ?Freudian and Jungian perspectives in dream analysis,? and ?spirituality and the modern world.? No electives focused exclusively on Jesus, however.

How about Florida State University at Tallahassee?s?39 religious studies courses? Among them are ?performance in Africa,? ?human rights and crimes against humanity,? ?religion and fantasy? and ?abortion and contraception in ancient Christianity.? Nope, no Jesus.

Arizona State University?s 50 religious studies classes run the gamut from ?anthropology of material culture? and ?ritual, symbol and myth? to ?what is religion? and ?gender and peace.? Again, no Jesus electives.

In fact, the only religion class at Arizona State focused exclusively on Christianity is called ?lost scriptures/lost Christianities,?and zeros in on the ?wide diversity of early Christianity and its suppressed and lost texts, which have been found in modern times.? But rest assured, the campus offers four classes on Islam and two on Stalinism.

Over at Illinois State University at Springfield, the ?History of Christmas? seminar spends its time ?on the origins and development of the celebration of Christmas. Themes include early Christian Nativity traditions, the date of Christmas, devotional literature, liturgical texts, hymnography, art, global perspectives on the celebration, and Christmas traditions.?

This class is likely an opportunity in part for the professor to highlight the holiday?s pagan timing origins and minimize the season?s message of selflessness, reducing Christmas to something of a joke or materialistic boondoggle. (The class is not offered this semester).

While Jesus does headline three classes among the 316 surveyed, some other characters also got their own top billing, such as ?the life of Muhammad,? ?The Brothers Karamozov? (fictional characters), and ?Martin Buber, thought and influence.?

Most of the 12 universities surveyed offered a hodgepodge of classes on a rainbow of religions, including Christianity as well as Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism.

But just because a class is on Christianity does not mean it will give much, if any, consideration or weight to the person of Jesus Christ or his teachings. He might get a lecture or two, if he?s lucky, but many course descriptions on Christianity classes don?t even include the word ?Jesus? at all, the survey found.

Take, for example, intro to church history at Alabama State University, which surveys the church ?from its beginning to contemporary times.? Talk about a broad brush.

Similarly, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a Christianity class looks at ?major developments in the history of Christian thought from its origins in the New Testament through the Protestant Reformation.?

An early Christian church class at the University of Connecticut hones in on ?the evolution of Christian institutions, leadership and doctrines in the Roman Empire. ? Topics may include gnosticism, prophecy, martyrdom, asceticism, pilgrimage, heresy (and) orthodoxy.?

Intro to the New Testament at Florida State University at Tallahassee looks at the Bible through the lens of ?historical development of the early Christian church, ancient Judaism, and the wider Greco-Roman world.?

Boise State University?s early Christianity course studies ?the rise and development of Christianity from its Jewish and Greek origins in the first century through its establishment and elaboration as the state religion of the late Roman empire in the fifth century.?

Nary a mention of Jesus, and so on and so forth.

When classes tackle Islam or other religions, it?s an ?examination? or ?understanding? of said belief systems; when the focus is on Christianity, terms like ?critical analysis? can often be found, survey results indicate.

Moreover,?the few classes on Jesus found in the survey don?t hone in on his teachings, but rather what other people said of him.

Take Georgia State University at Atlanta?s ?Jesus Inside and Outside the Gospels? course. It?s a ?comparative study of portrayals of Jesus as they have evolved over the past two millennia ? and visual depictions of Jesus in modern media such as film, television and the internet.?

The University of Hawaii?s ?Life and Teachings of Jesus? class is a ?critical study? of gospels and of extra-Biblical sources.

And the survey?s third and final elective solely devoted to Jesus comes from Butler University in Indiana. Called ?Historical Jesus,? it offers a ?close look at Jesus of Nazareth, focused on sources and methods of knowledge about Jesus as a historical figure. Attention will also be paid to historical and cultural context, and to beliefs about and depictions of Jesus in early Christian literature.?

The point of all this is not to say students should be forced to study Jesus. But if this survey highlights anything, it?s that they?re not even given the option. Meanwhile the classes that do focus on Jesus or Christianity sidestep his message and teachings in favor of historical context and critical analysis.

Bottom line: Universities across America show an outright disregard?and disdain?for Jesus Christ.

Outbreak Specialists Track Down Recent Coronavirus

Health officials are trying to figure out if the virus is moving from person to person

coronavirus, SARS, outbreak specialists, virologists, human coronavirus, communicable diseases, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Image: BioWiki

Maria Zambon was having d?j? vu. Earlier this fall, she found out about a new coronavirus that had come seemingly from nowhere to kill a Saudi man in Jeddah in June and seriously sicken another.? The survivor had been flown from Qatar to a London hospital. His lungs were overwhelmed with infection, his kidneys failing. Virologists at Erasmus Medical Center (EMC), in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, were already working on an isolate from the Saudi man to decode the virus's genetic sequence. They named the virus HCoV-EMC, short for human coronavirus and the institution's initials.

The situation reminded Zambon, director of reference microbiology for Britain's Health Protection Agency, of the SARS outbreak of 2003, which spread from China to as far as Toronto and killed 916 people. Fortunately, the recent coronavirus appears to be emerging more slowly than SARS did (also a coronavirus). To date, only six cases have been reported?four in Saudi Arabia and two in Qatar. Two of the infections have been fatal. The gnawing concern, however, is that the virus will start spreading from person to person, fanning out more broadly to infect people around the globe.

A recently discovered cluster of illnesses in Saudi Arabia has raised concerns that the virus may be able to move from person to person. Four men who lived in the same household in Riyadh became sick with similar symptoms within a short period of time. Two of the men tested positive for the virus. The two others?one of whom died?are currently classified as probable cases. Their infection status may remain ambiguous. With the source of the infection unknown and the incubation period unclear, authorities may never get a definitive answer about whether these family members were all infected from a common source, or whether one of them got sick and infected the others, says Anthony Mounts, the World Health Organization's technical expert for the outbreak.? "It sure raises your concern. But it's not definitive." If the virus spread from person to person in that Riyadh household, it has apparently since sputtered and died out.

Still, the discovery of additional cases, some in a cluster, has prompted WHO to cast a wider net in its search for other cases. The Geneva-based global health agency had initially warned countries to be on the lookout for cases of severe and unexplained respiratory illness in people who had visited or were residents of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Now it is convinced that whatever the source of the virus is, it is probably not unique to those countries. By getting health authorities around the world to look harder for possible cases, it hopes to answer another question that people like Mounts and Zambon have been asking themselves: Is this virus actually new, or has it just newly come into view? If it is the former, then worries about what the virus might do will remain high.? But if it has been infecting people for years but was only spotted because two severe cases brought it to light, then the virus may seem like less of a threat.

"There's always a question of 'Well, actually, has it been around forever and a day and we just missed it because we haven't tested?'" Zambon notes. It is commonly accepted that medical science has not identified all the bugs that make people sick. In fact, before the SARS outbreak, only two viruses in the coronavirus family were known to infect people. In the years after SARS became the third, the human coronaviruses NL63 and HKU1 were added to that list.

Finding the answer means testing more patients with similar symptoms to see if they too are infected with the EMC virus. Some countries?Britain among them?have been testing sick pilgrims returning from this year's Hajj, the world's largest annual pilgrimage that brings roughly three million Muslims to? Mecca every year. So far there have been no reports of additional cases among the returning Hajjis. And as time passes, concerns about the pilgrimage as a disease-amplification opportunity are starting to wane. "The government of Saudi Arabia does quite extensive surveillance during the Hajj and was particularly vigilant during this season. They have reassured us that nothing unusual happened," Mounts says.

Officer: Suicide led to wariness about Manning

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? An Army private accused of sending reams of classified U.S. documents to the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks was kept in tight pretrial confinement partly because another prisoner had recently committed suicide, the former security chief at the Quantico, Va., Marine Corps base testified Wednesday.

Marine Col. Robert Oltman was a witness at a pretrial hearing for Pfc. Bradley Manning at Fort Meade, outside Baltimore. Manning's lawyers are seeking dismissal of all charges, claiming his confinement in the Quantico brig amounted to illegal punishment.

Manning was held there for nine months, from July 2010 to April 2011, when he was moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Throughout his time at Quantico, he was designated a "maximum custody" detainee and considered at risk of either suicide or harming himself or others. He was locked up alone for at least 23 hours a day, forced to sleep naked for several nights and forced to stand naked at attention one morning, his lawyers assert.

At Fort Leavenworth, Manning was re-evaluated and given a medium-security classification

Oltman and others have testified that psychiatrists who examined Manning at Quantico repeatedly recommended that his conditions be eased. But Oltman, whose command included the brig, said he was skeptical about at least one of those recommendations because another detainee had killed himself in December, 2009, after his custody status was reduced based upon the advice of the same doctor, Navy Capt. William Hochter, the psychiatrist assigned to the brig.

"He didn't have the strongest credibility with me with regards to his recommendations," Oltman said under questioning by civilian defense attorney David Coombs.

Oltman said he told Hochter in January 2011 that Manning would remain on "prevention of injury" status unless senior officers decided otherwise.

Oltman acknowledged he told Hochter: "''Nothing's going to change. He won't be able to hurt himself. He's not going to be able to get away, and our way of ensuring this is that he will remain on this status indefinitely."

One of the security measures was the removal of Manning's underwear at night, starting March 2, 2011, after he told the brig commander that if he wanted to kill himself, he could hang himself with the waistband. Coombs suggested Manning was commenting on the absurdity of his situation.

Coombs produced an email in which Quantico's chief legal officer at the time, Lt. Col. Christopher Greer, made light of the underwear episode with a Dr. Seuss parody: "I can wear them in a box. I can wear them with a fox. I can wear them in the day. I can wear them so I say. But I can't wear them at night. My comments gave the staff a fright," Coombs read.

Oltman acknowledged that he responded to the email with the signature, "Sam I am," another Dr. Seuss reference.

"Was it funny to you that Pfc. Manning was being stripped at night," Coombs asked?

"No, it was not, it was a very serious issue," Oltman said.

Supporters of the 24-year-old Army private again filled the courtroom on the second day of what is expected to be a six-day hearing.

Manning faces possible life imprisonment if convicted of aiding the enemy, the most serious of the 22 charges that he faces.

He is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks while he was working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

The materials Manning is suspected of leaking include sensitive reports on foreign governments and leaders and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men later found to have included a Reuters news photographer and his driver. The video garnered worldwide attention. The Pentagon concluded the troops acted appropriately during the attack, having mistaken the camera equipment for weapons.

Married Cancer Researchers Both Get Breast Cancer

Fighting cancer is never easy. But as Dr. Oliver Bogler undergoes his second month of chemotherapy for breast cancer, he says he is grateful that his wife can relate. Five years ago, she was also going through her second month of chemotherapy, also for breast cancer.

Oliver and his wife Irene are both cancer researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. They met 20 years ago while doing cancer research at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in San Diego. The two connected over their passion for research.

Irene, now 52, was the first in their family to face cancer. It was 2007, she was 46, and they had two children under the age of seven at the time.

"I think you feel numb, a little bit shocked, but within a few days I was in at Anderson having tests and making determinations on treatments," says Irene. She went through chemotherapy, a mastectomy and radiation, in that order. During that time, Irene says she remembers Oliver giving her unconditional support.

"Oliver was great," says Irene, "he obviously didn't understand the personal experience but he understood the process."

The two have also drawn from their extensive background in cancer research: They know what to expect when facing cancer head-on.

Morning-After Pill: Should Doctors Prescribe to Teens? Watch Video FDA Shutdown of Organic Peanut Butter Plant Watch Video

"Even though you're a laboratory researcher, you do over time, meet cancer patients," says Irene, "so you are sort of immersed in that." Never before, however, have the two researchers met a couple who have developed the same kind of breast cancer at the same age.

Oliver, 46 years old, is now undergoing chemotherapy and is looking ahead to his own radical mastectomy in March.

"First of all, we don't have a history of cancer" in the family, says Oliver's brother Daniel. "Second of all," he says, "breast cancer is an extremely unusual thing for a man."

Breast cancer is very rare in men. "Of all the cases of breast cancer, 99 percent are women and one percent are men," according to Oliver's doctor and men's breast cancer specialist at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Sharon Giordano. The Boglers are the first couple Giordano has ever seen who have both had breast cancer -- and she has seen over 100 male breast cancer patients.

"These two people who do nothing but work against cancer all their lives -- what have they done to deserve this? Why does lightning have to strike twice on their little family?" asks Daniel. He does, however, say, "If it has to happen to anyone, he's someone who's intimately familiar with cancer and he's at the best place to get the best care."

"I am probably not going to die of this in the next five or 10 years," says Oliver, "I have to tell you, it would have been better to go to the doctor sooner but I couldn't imagine this happening twice in our family. Having a wife who had [breast cancer], I thought it would be weird saying I had it too."

Giordano says a lot of the time men have a delayed diagnosis because they don't think they could be at risk for breast cancer. "Men on average have an advanced disease because you have to have a lump to identify it. They don't examine their nipples and think breast cancer."

Members of Oliver's family say they wondered if the cancer research could have been a reason Irene and Oliver both had the same cancer.

"It's not Irene's genes or Oliver's genes, so you do wonder why," says Daniel. "We asked Oliver about that when he was diagnosed; we thought maybe while feeding his cells and growing his cultures."

How to make the most of online gaming - Ozami Gaming Site

Games

Online Games

When it comes to online gaming, one of the most important things to consider is your broadband connection. If you have a broadband connection that is too slow, your game will simply lag and thus the experience will not be enjoyable ? but how else can you make the most of online gaming?

Assess your console

To make the most of online gaming it is important to assess what console you will be using. Obviously there are two main types of computer, the Windows PC and the Apple Mac, which is probably what most people think of when they think of online gaming. However, in the world of online gaming, these are not your only options. Consoles such as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii can also connect to the internet to allow you to play games with others.

The easiest and most popular way of connecting these consoles to the internet is by a wireless connection and so this is definitely something you need to consider when looking at broadband packages.

A wireless connection that is reliable will really help you make the most of the game that you are playing as it means it will not lag and you will be able to keep up with the other players in the online world.

This is wonderful if you are the only person in your house using the internet, but if you aren?t it can become very unreliable. Ensuring that you have wired and wireless options together is definitely a good idea to ensure perfect gameplay.

Get up to speed

To make your online gaming experience the best that it can be, you need to ensure that you have a good broadband speed; one that will allow you to play the games that you want to play. The faster the speed you can get; the better.

Ultimately faster speeds means you will be able to connect to and play the game without a lot of waiting around in between. This means that you will have the best online gaming experience possible.

If online gaming is something that you?re into, whether it be via a traditional console or PC, it is definitely important to ensure you get the fastest broadband connection that you can. Speak to your service provider about this as they will be able to recommend the best package for you.

Remember, you want your game to run as smoothly as possible to have the best chance of winning ? so don?t jeopardise this with lengthy waiting periods or a poor connection. Many packages are competitively priced in order to compete with the large number of providers currently offering broadband services so you needn?t spend a fortune on your internet package to get it up to speed.

Statistics Show Severity Of Childhood Obesity Crisis Your Health ...

From Canada.com?..

Thank you for bringing to the public?s attention the urgency of the childhood obesity issue in your editorial on Nov. 23.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation?s vision is that all children and youth will grow up healthy with access to physical activity and healthy eating where they live, learn and play. The Jump Rope for Heart program supports this through the fun event of skipping and is supported in over 30 schools in the Nanaimo Ladysmith school district and 135 schools Island wide.

In addition to the statistics that you quoted from 2007, there are even more concerning statistics that come from the recent 2012 Report Card on Children and Youth. These stats are not showing improvement in the lives of the next generation:

? 46% of Canadian kids get three hours or less of active play per week, including weekends

? 63% of Canadian kids? free time after school and on weekends is spent being sedentary

? Canadian kids are spending seven hours and 48 minutes per day in front of screens, exceeding the guideline of no more than two hours per day.

We cannot simply point the finger at parents and kids for these trends. It takes an entire community to implement this magnitude of change. Changes in our neighbourhoods and environments can make it challenging for families to make healthy choices.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation is working to help make it easier for children and youth to eat healthy food and be more physically active: ? We are launching a campaign in the fall 2012 to encourage British Columbians to ask for nutrition information in restaurants across the province. Diners can use this information to make healthier choices for themselves and their families when eating out.

? We are working with local governments to design communities with health in mind, such as making it safer and easier to walk or bike to and from school.

? Our National ?Time to Start Campaign? is an educational campaign that will be launched in August 2012 to help give their kids a healthy start to the new school year. Parents will find helpful tips on preparing healthy breakfasts and finding active ways to get to school.

US-Russian Crew Picked for One-Year Space Station Flight

A veteran NASA space commander and Russian cosmonaut have signed on for the ultimate space voyage: a yearlong trip on the International Space Station.

American astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will launch on the one-year space station flight in spring 2015 and return to Earth in spring 2016, NASA officials announced today (Nov. 26). They will begin their mission training in early 2013.

The mission will help NASA understand how the human body adapts to extremely long space missions, such as voyages around the moon, to an asteroid and ultimately to Mars, NASA officials said.

"Congratulations to Scott and Mikhail on their selection for this important mission," William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations in Washington, said in a statement. "Their skills and previous experience aboard the space station align with the mission's requirements. The one-year increment will expand the bounds of how we live and work in space and will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit." [Most Extreme Human Spaceflight Records]?

NASA is developing spacecraft and mission plans to send astronauts to visit a near-Earth asteroid by 2025, a goal set by President Barack Obama. The space agency is also reportedly studying potential manned missions back to the moon.

Kelly, 48, is a U.S. Navy captain who has flown on two space shuttle missions and one long-duration expedition on the International Space Station. He commanded the space station's Expedition 26 mission in 2010 during his third spaceflight.

Kelly hails from West Orange, N.J., and joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1996. His identical twin brother Mark Kelly also served as a Navy captain and NASA astronaut before retiring from the military and spaceflight in 2011.

Kornienko, 52, is also a veteran spaceflyer. The native of Syzran in Russia's Kuibyshev region is a former paratrooper officer who joined Russia's cosmonaut corps in 1998. Kornienko spent more than 176 days in space as a flight engineer on the station's Expedition 23 and 24 crews.

NASA and Russia announced plans for the one-year space station voyage earlier this year. Rumors of the flight were circling prior to the announcement, with the Russian news agency Interfax suggesting that veteran NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson ?a veteran station commander ?as a potential choice for the American crewmember. Whitson stepped down from her position as NASA's Chief Astronaut earlier this year to rejoin the agency's active spaceflying ranks.

Today's announcement, however, puts that theory to rest.

"Selection of the candidate for the one year mission was thorough and difficult due to the number of suitable candidates from the Cosmonaut? corps," Vladimir Popovkin, the head of Russian Federal Space Agency, said in a statement. "We have chosen the most responsible, skilled and enthusiastic crew members to expand space exploration, and we have full confidence in them."

The 2015 space station flight by Kelly and Kornienko will be the longest mission to the International Space Station, but not the longest continuous spaceflight. That record is held by cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, who lived aboard Russia's Mir space station from January 1994 until March 1995, ultimately spending 438 consecutive days in orbit.

The International Space Station is the product of cooperation by NASA, Russia and the space agencies of Europe, Japan and Canada. Construction of the $100 billion space station began in 1998 with the first crew taking up residence in 2000. Astronauts and cosmonauts have lived on the space station in rotating crews ever since.

Everything Cebu | Corner Bakery

Tucked away in a secluded location here in Cebu City is a cozy little haven where you?ll find baked goods that are deliciously tempting and freshly made. Corner Bakery might sound like a very unassuming name for this place, but it?s also apt because the place really is situated along an intersection of two streets, in the residential neighborhood called Villa Aurora.

corner bakery Corner Bakery This bakery was founded in 2007. At first, owners Jason and Michelle Ng operated their business as a home-based one that provided yummy baked goods for their family and friends, who passed the word around. Good word of mouth was apparently enough to keep bringing the customers to them even though they did not advertise extensively. Michelle Ng told the Freeman that wants the quality of Corner Bakery?s products to speak for itself and that quality is at the top of her agenda when she creates the dishes served in their cozy little space. This commitment to quality also ties in with the fact that Corner Bakery?s products are made with no preservatives.

By the way, don?t confuse this Corner Bakery with another Corner Bakery that happens to be the bakery brand of Max?s Restaurant. Corner Bakery Company?s signage has a style similar to that of the Corner Bakery Caf? franchise brand in the United States.

Regardless of its name, Corner Bakery also serves food aside from baked goods. Pasta dishes like lasagna, spaghetti Bolognese, and penne ai funghi (short thick diagonally cut tubular pasta, with mushrooms and cream sauce) are on the menu, for those who would like carbs other than bread or pastries. The couple who own and manage Corner Bakery travel occasionally and pick up culinary trends that they can incorporate into their menu.

People who use the Web site foursquare.com have good things to say about the hot chili wings (served with bleu cheese dip) and the potato salad. Even a bakery staple like pan de sal comes highly recommended when it?s from Corner Bakery, and if you?re the kind of person who likes to snack on sandwiches, then you might want to give the tuna bun a try. As for Corner Bakery?s dessert items, the s?mores (treats with the flavor of toasted marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between graham crackers), mochi, mango cream pie (made with Guadalupe mangoes), and red velvet cake are the most popular among the Foursquare users.

Corner Bakery red velvet cheesecake Corner Bakery

The Web site foodspotting.com has some customer photos of Corner Bakery?s blueberry cheesecake, choco swirl cheesecake, and red velvet cheesecake, for the cheesecake fanatics out there. People on Foodspotting also recommended Corner Bakery?s homemade chocolate, choco-nutty banana cupcake, carrot cupcake, spaghetti Bolognese, and crostini (slices of toasted bread served with a spread). Even on Instagram, people have been known to rave about the yummy spaghetti Bolognese or the carbonara, the bread, and the artisan dark chocolate bars from Corner Bakery Company.

Along with such a treat as cinnamon bread or possibly hotdog bread topped with mozzarella, you would probably enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Cold drinks like Iced Caf? Latte, Mocharamel Frost, and Coffee Jelly Frost are also available for you to pair with your food order.

If you have special occasions coming up, Corner Bakery takes orders for customized cakes and cupcakes. It has made cakes with themes like Ninjago, Power Rangers, Transformers, Bob the Builder, Geronimo Stilton, Dora the Explorer, and Tangled that were commissioned for some lucky kids? birthdays. Since Christmas is fast approaching, you might be interested to know that in 2011, Corner Bakery had quite a large selection of Christmas goodies as gift ideas. These included its Christmas collection of Angry Birds cupcakes, Santa Claus and poinsettia cupcakes, ?food for the gods? cupcakes, limited-edition vanilla almond brownies, boxes of ensaymaditas (cheese and Belgian choco flavors), fruit jelly, chocolate chip Kahlua bars, and bucketfuls of chocolate treats. Its Christmas cakes with holiday designs were the following: red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, old-fashioned chocolate fudge cake, chocolate torte, and orange champagne torte.

On Monday through Saturday, you may visit the bakery from 9 a.m to 9 p.m., and on Sunday, its hours are 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Corner Bakery is at 44 President Roxas Street, Villa Aurora, Cebu City. If you?re coming from the Ayala Center Cebu area, just turn left after Castle Peak Hotel onto President Roxas Street. Corner Bakery Company is at the left corner just after Abaseria Deli and Caf?. You can call the bakery at telephone number (032)238-3508 for orders. You could send mng.cbc@gmail.com an e-mail message if that?s what you would prefer. Its Web site is http://cornerbakery.multiply.com/ but with a more updated page on Facebook as well, at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Corner-Bakery/203542826344058

jonathanfrakess: Western Belize Happenings!: Doctors die painless ...

docs_die_grave_pic by Ken Murray| Years ago, Charlie, a highly respected orthopedist and a mentor of mine, found a lump in his stomach. He had a surgeon explore the area, and the diagnosis was pancreatic cancer. This surgeon was one of the best in the country. He had even invented a new procedure for this exact cancer that could triple a patient?s five-year-survival odds?from 5 percent to 15 percent?albeit with a poor quality of life. Charlie was uninterested. He went home the next day, closed his practice, and never set foot in a hospital again. He focused on spending time with family and feeling as good as possible. Several months later, he died at home. He got no chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical treatment. Medicare didn?t spend much on him.
It?s not a frequent topic of discussion, but doctors die, too. And they don?t die like the rest of us. What?s unusual about them is not how much treatment they get compared to most Americans, but how little. For all the time they spend fending off the deaths of others, they tend to be fairly serene when faced with death themselves. They know exactly what is going to happen, they know the choices, and they generally have access to any sort of medical care they could want. But they go gently.
Of course, doctors don?t want to die; they want to live. But they know enough about modern medicine to know its limits. And they know enough about death to know what all people fear most: dying in pain, and dying alone. They?ve talked about this with their families. They want to be sure, when the time comes, that no heroic measures will happen?that they will never experience, during their last moments on earth, someone breaking their ribs in an attempt to resuscitate them with CPR (that?s what happens if CPR is done right).
Almost all medical professionals have seen what we call ?futile care? being performed on people. That?s when doctors bring the cutting edge of technology to bear on a grievously ill person near the end of life. The patient will get cut open, perforated with tubes, hooked up to machines, and assaulted with drugs. All of this occurs in the Intensive Care Unit at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars a day. What it buys is misery we would not inflict on a terrorist. I cannot count the number of times fellow physicians have told me, in words that vary only slightly, ?Promise me if you find me like this that you?ll kill me.? They mean it. Some medical personnel wear medallions stamped ?NO CODE? to tell physicians not to perform CPR on them. I have even seen it as a tattoo.
To administer medical care that makes people suffer is anguishing. Physicians are trained to gather information without revealing any of their own feelings, but in private, among fellow doctors, they?ll vent. ?How can anyone do that to their family members?? they?ll ask. I suspect it?s one reason physicians have higher rates of alcohol abuse and depression than professionals in most other fields. I know it?s one reason I stopped participating in hospital care for the last 10 years of my practice.
How has it come to this?that doctors administer so much care that they wouldn?t want for themselves? The simple, or not-so-simple, answer is this: patients, doctors, and the system.
To see how patients play a role, imagine a scenario in which someone has lost consciousness and been admitted to an emergency room. As is so often the case, no one has made a plan for this situation, and shocked and scared family members find themselves caught up in a maze of choices. They?re overwhelmed. When doctors ask if they want ?everything? done, they answer yes. Then the nightmare begins. Sometimes, a family really means ?do everything,? but often they just mean ?do everything that?s reasonable.? The problem is that they may not know what?s reasonable, nor, in their confusion and sorrow, will they ask about it or hear what a physician may be telling them. For their part, doctors told to do ?everything? will do it, whether it is reasonable or not.
The above scenario is a common one. Feeding into the problem are unrealistic expectations of what doctors can accomplish. Many people think of CPR as a reliable lifesaver when, in fact, the results are usually poor. I?ve had hundreds of people brought to me in the emergency room after getting CPR. Exactly one, a healthy man who?d had no heart troubles (for those who want specifics, he had a ?tension pneumothorax?), walked out of the hospital. If a patient suffers from severe illness, old age, or a terminal disease, the odds of a good outcome from CPR are infinitesimal, while the odds of suffering are overwhelming. Poor knowledge and misguided expectations lead to a lot of bad decisions.
But of course it?s not just patients making these things happen. Doctors play an enabling role, too. The trouble is that even doctors who hate to administer futile care must find a way to address the wishes of patients and families. Imagine, once again, the emergency room with those grieving, possibly hysterical, family members. They do not know the doctor. Establishing trust and confidence under such circumstances is a very delicate thing. People are prepared to think the doctor is acting out of base motives, trying to save time, or money, or effort, especially if the doctor is advising against further treatment.
Some doctors are stronger communicators than others, and some doctors are more adamant, but the pressures they all face are similar. When I faced circumstances involving end-of-life choices, I adopted the approach of laying out only the options that I thought were reasonable (as I would in any situation) as early in the process as possible. When patients or families brought up unreasonable choices, I would discuss the issue in layman?s terms that portrayed the downsides clearly. If patients or families still insisted on treatments I considered pointless or harmful, I would offer to transfer their care to another doctor or hospital.
Should I have been more forceful at times? I know that some of those transfers still haunt me. One of the patients of whom I was most fond was an attorney from a famous political family. She had severe diabetes and terrible circulation, and, at one point, she developed a painful sore on her foot. Knowing the hazards of hospitals, I did everything I could to keep her from resorting to surgery. Still, she sought out outside experts with whom I had no relationship. Not knowing as much about her as I did, they decided to perform bypass surgery on her chronically clogged blood vessels in both legs. This didn?t restore her circulation, and the surgical wounds wouldn?t heal. Her feet became gangrenous, and she endured bilateral leg amputations. Two weeks later, in the famous medical center in which all this had occurred, she died.
It?s easy to find fault with both doctors and patients in such stories, but in many ways all the parties are simply victims of a larger system that encourages excessive treatment. In some unfortunate cases, doctors use the fee-for-service model to do everything they can, no matter how pointless, to make money. More commonly, though, doctors are fearful of litigation and do whatever they?re asked, with little feedback, to avoid getting in trouble.
Even when the right preparations have been made, the system can still swallow people up. One of my patients was a man named Jack, a 78-year-old who had been ill for years and undergone about 15 major surgical procedures. He explained to me that he never, under any circumstances, wanted to be placed on life support machines again. One Saturday, however, Jack suffered a massive stroke and got admitted to the emergency room unconscious, without his wife. Doctors did everything possible to resuscitate him and put him on life support in the ICU. This was Jack?s worst nightmare. When I arrived at the hospital and took over Jack?s care, I spoke to his wife and to hospital staff, bringing in my office notes with his care preferences. Then I turned off the life support machines and sat with him. He died two hours later.
Even with all his wishes documented, Jack hadn?t died as he?d hoped. The system had intervened. One of the nurses, I later found out, even reported my unplugging of Jack to the authorities as a possible homicide. Nothing came of it, of course; Jack?s wishes had been spelled out explicitly, and he?d left the paperwork to prove it. But the prospect of a police investigation is terrifying for any physician. I could far more easily have left Jack on life support against his stated wishes, prolonging his life, and his suffering, a few more weeks. I would even have made a little more money, and Medicare would have ended up with an additional $500,000 bill. It?s no wonder many doctors err on the side of overtreatment.
But doctors still don?t over-treat themselves. They see the consequences of this constantly. Almost anyone can find a way to die in peace at home, and pain can be managed better than ever. Hospice care, which focuses on providing terminally ill patients with comfort and dignity rather than on futile cures, provides most people with much better final days. Amazingly, studies have found that people placed in hospice care often live longer than people with the same disease who are seeking active cures. I was struck to hear on the radio recently that the famous reporter Tom Wicker had ?died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.? Such stories are, thankfully, increasingly common.
Several years ago, my older cousin Torch (born at home by the light of a flashlight?or torch) had a seizure that turned out to be the result of lung cancer that had gone to his brain. I arranged for him to see various specialists, and we learned that with aggressive treatment of his condition, including three to five hospital visits a week for chemotherapy, he would live perhaps four months. Ultimately, Torch decided against any treatment and simply took pills for brain swelling. He moved in with me.
We spent the next eight months doing a bunch of things that he enjoyed, having fun together like we hadn?t had in decades. We went to Disneyland, his first time. We?d hang out at home. Torch was a sports nut, and he was very happy to watch sports and eat my cooking. He even gained a bit of weight, eating his favorite foods rather than hospital foods. He had no serious pain, and he remained high-spirited. One day, he didn?t wake up. He spent the next three days in a coma-like sleep and then died. The cost of his medical care for those eight months, for the one drug he was taking, was about $20.
Torch was no doctor, but he knew he wanted a life of quality, not just quantity. Don?t most of us? If there is a state of the art of end-of-life care, it is this: death with dignity. As for me, my physician has my choices. They were easy to make, as they are for most physicians. There will be no heroics, and I will go gentle into that good night. Like my mentor Charlie. Like my cousin Torch. Like my fellow doctors.
Ken Murray, MD, is Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at USC.

Politics over parenting: UK foster family's children removed over ...

A political scandal has erupted in Britain after a local council took away three ?ethnic? children from a foster family, because the parents support anti-immigration UK Independence Party. After a firestorm of criticism, the move will be reviewed.

The couple in question (who have wished to remain anonymous) are in their fifties, with the wife a qualified child nurse, and have been registered foster parents for over six years.

In September, they were given an emergency placement of a baby girl, a boy, and an older girl from a troubled family of immigrant descent. The assignment was initially judged a success by the council?s child services, with the foster parents described as ?exemplary? and the children as ?thriving,? with the baby steadily gaining weight.

After eight weeks, the foster agency received an anonymous tip-off that the couple were registered members of the UK Independence Party (UKIP).

The wife told the Daily Telegraph that she was ?dumbfounded? when a council representative visited their house, and challenged them over their UKIP membership.

?My question to both of them was, 'What has UKIP got to do with having the children removed?? Then one of them said, 'Well, UKIP have got racist policies.? The implication was that we were racist.?

The party ? which consistently scores around ten per cent in opinion polls ? campaigns against immigration, multiculturalism and political correctness, but is not widely regarded as a radical party.

\"I?ve got mixed race in my family. I said, 'I am absolutely offended that you could come in my house and accuse me of being a member of a racist party,?? the wife told the visitor.

Within a week all the children were removed from her care.

The family says they were ?stigmatized and slandered.?

?We felt like we were criminals,? said the wife, who believes the local council will not entrust any more children into the family?s care.

Once the story broke, the council initially stood by its decision.

\"Also the fact of the matter is I have to look at the children's cultural and ethnic needs,? Joyce Thacker, the council's Director of Children and Young People's Services, said during a BBC radio interview on Saturday morning.

\"These children are from EU migrant backgrounds and UKIP has very clear statements on ending multiculturalism, not having that going forward, and I have to think about how sensitive I am being to those children.\"

Thacker also said the council was under obligation to be particularly careful, after a judge in a different case criticized it for being insensitive to the cultural needs of children from different ethnic backgrounds than the foster parents.

Politicians then rounded on the beleaguered council.

\"Rotherham Council have made the wrong decision in the wrong way for the wrong reasons. Rotherham's reasons for denying this family the chance to foster are indefensible,\" said minister Michael Gove, who manages the department responsible for children?s services, and was himself adopted as a child.

Opposition leader David Miliband, whose Labour Party runs the council, immediately distanced himself from its decisions.

\"We need loving homes for children across the country. That can come in different forms, it's not about what political party you are a member of,\" he declared in a statement.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage called the decision?political prejudice of the worst kind.?

The Rotherham Borough Council has since backtracked on the decision, and will conduct an internal investigation. Initial conclusions are expected on Monday.
