ICD-10 ? Are Healthcare Professionals Prepared? - Hive Health Media

The October 1, 2014 deadline for ICD-10 implementation is just around the corner, and while 85% of healthcare professionals recognize that this transition will have a big impact on their practice, a recent survey suggested that 75% of practices were just aware or just starting the implementation process. This
could cause some troubles down the road because if an ICD-10 transition isn?t handled properly (if the change is rushed) it can have an adverse effect on clinical and financial performance down the road.

ICD-10 is the latest revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. In basic terms it?s a list of medical classifications as stated by the World Health Organization.? Updating to the ICD-10 codes, though, requires the implementation of version 5010 of the X12 HIPAA EDI standards, and this may force a number of practices to either upgrade or replace their current information systems infrastructure and even change some of their normal coding practices.

According to the survey, 59% of practices plan to upgrade their existing tools or buy new software to make sure they will be compliant with all the regulations. These are the companies that have recognized the major shift that the industry is facing, and are taking steps to make the transition that much easier.

Transitioning to ICD-10 isn?t something that will happen overnight, and some practices aren?t in a position to handle every element of the switch on their own. A partner or consultant can help assess the impact of the transition, plan out a roadmap for organization-wide adoption, and help set up the necessary training and other programs to make sure everything is completed on time, so the practices will be in compliance before the October, 2014 deadline.

ICD-10 has been looming on the horizon for a while, now, and while the deadline has been pushed back a few times in the past, this year marks the last chance all these practices will have to implement the new system and bring the company up to speed. As the survey showed, though, most practices are just
now starting to realize that there is a lot of work to do. A proper implementation can require a lot of effort, so the sooner the process is started, the better the results will likely be.
