Monsoon health guide: Dos and Don?ts

New Delhi: Monsoon showers do come as a relief but also bring with them health irritants like allergies, infections and indigestion. There`s no need to panic, say experts, who suggest small variations in eating habits to keep problems at bay. The increased humidity in atmosphere takes a toll on the body`s digestion. Some dietary changes can help sort this out.

First and foremost, avoid oily food, says dietician Ritika Samaddar.

"Humidity levels are high during the monsoon because of which the capability of the body to digest is at its lowest. Digestion is generally weak. Therefore, avoid heavy and oily food during the monsoon season as it can lead to an upset stomach," Samaddar told a news agency.

Experts say besides avoiding oily food, one should also keep away from street food.

Greater intake of green leafy vegetables builds immunity and is light on the stomach. But most vegetables and fruits also carry the risk of infection and, therefore, should be washed properly before use.

Fruits are the ideal food as they restore energy. But avoid watermelons and muskmelons and opt for mangoes, apples, pomegranates and pears, among others, experts say.

But excess of anything is harmful. Gorging too much on mangoes can lead to ****les, says nutritionist Rashmi Channana.

"Mangoes are not the only reason you get ****les and boils. This is also caused by the change of weather. But if mangoes are consumed in excess, then it can lead to ****les and boils," Channana said.

Foods such as barley, brown rice and oats are the stomach`s best friend during the monsoon season.

If a dash of garlic is added to soups, stir fries and curries, it also helps building the body`s immunity.

The intake of dairy products should not be high as they have maximum propensity to get infected by germs.

Milk, said to be a complete diet, is not advised during the monsoon season. Instead one can go for curd, says Nidhi Yadav, head (Clinical Nutrition), Fortis Healthcare.

"One should have yogurt instead of milk and should add almonds to the diet. Also drink boiled and purified water during these days," she added.

The damp and humid weather leads to fungal and bacterial infection too. Medical practitioner Veena Sehgal warns against ignoring it as that could be an indication of dengue.

"People who face skin allergies during monsoon should not eat spicy food because spicy food stimulates the circulation and raises body temperature, which leads to skin irritation, allergies and diseases. If the problem persists, one should immediately go for a blood test," said Sehgal.

A lot of skin problems erupt due to humidity. The skin gets oily and is prone to bacterial infections. Other problems such as pyodera, boils, change in skin colour dullness, rashes and patchy skin also arise.

To avoid these skin expert Anil Kumar Chopra advises: "Drink more water during this season to quickly overcome skin problems."

"Use anti-bacterial soaps and face wash and talcum to keep your skin dry," he adds.

York Common Cents | How to spruce up your new home on a budget

Buying a new home is expensive.

And I?m not just talking about the thousands you spend actually buying the house ? I?m also talking about the ?extras,? i.e. realizing that you don?t have a laundry hamper, plunger or any furniture for your new patio. Before you know it, you?re at Target spending $300 to outfit your new digs.

So when it comes to making sure things look their best, there may not be any room left in the budget to replace the old cabinets or cracked tile floors. However, there are ways to give them a new look, according to TheStreet.

Here are some DIY projects to spruce up a new home:

  • Cabinet Scratches: Even though kitchen cabinets are subject to wear and tear, you can still extend the life of the cabinets with some quick maintenance. ?At home improvement stores, you?ll notice a few products available to cover chips and scratches in cabinets. These products are basically ?crayons? that allow you to ?color in? the problematic areas in your cabinets,? says Frank Foti, business management advisor for Mr. Handyman. ?It won?t make the problem go away, but it will make the chip or scratch much less noticeable.?
  • Bathroom Fixtures: Replacing a damaged or old lighting fixture is an inexpensive, yet impactful way to update your bathroom. Manja Swanson, chief creative officer of Lamps Plus says for a quick fix replacing a bathroom light, select the same type, or at least a similar size as the existing fixture in order to avoid the cost of hiring an electrician.
  • Sprucing Up Kitchen Appliances: If they?re still working properly, there?s no need to replace them ? you can clean them and fix the scratches or dents. Steve Ash, senior repairman at PartSelect.com, shares these tips on getting those kitchen appliances into shape: Cover scratches and dings on your appliances with manufacturer-recommended touch-up paint; Look for areas on your dishwasher racks where the vinyl coating is worn, exposing the metal wire underneath, as this can cause the racks to rust. Use a vinyl repair kit to re-coat the damaged areas; Clean your range hood with dish soap. Vinegar and baking soda can also make a great abrasive cleaner.

Amy Senser sentenced to 41 months in hit-and-run death

Amy Senser, the wife of former Minnesota Vikings player Joe Senser, claimed to be deeply remorseful after receiving her 41-month prison sentence for killing Anousone Phanthavong in a hit-and-run accident last year.

"I'm sorry...I hope you can believe me. I never saw your son that night, and if I had, I would have stopped to help him," Senser, 45, told Phanthavong's family at her sentencing Monday.

Senser hugged Phanthavong's mother and told her that she tattooed her late son's name on her wrist.

"We felt a relief to [hear her] actually speak for herself and just hear her apology," said the victim's niece, Cindy Phanthavong.

"All that they've wanted in this criminal proceeding was for justice to be served and they're thankful that that was accomplished," said James Ballentine, attorney for the Phanthavong family.

Senser testified in May that she knew she had hit something on the night of August 23, but said she believed it was a pothole or construction cone. She said she didn't see 38-year-old Phanthavong.

When asked to describe what the feeling of the impact was like, Senser said, "I've never been in an accident so I wasn't quite sure if I'd hit a pothole or one of those construction signs."

Phanthavong, a restaurant cook, was fatally struck by Senser's sport utility vehicle as he refueled his stalled car on an Interstate 94 ramp in Minneapolis.

The highly charged case was taxing on the Senser family as it pitted stepdaughter against stepmother.

Senser's stepdaughter, 28-year-old Brittani Senser, said she forced her stepmother to admit her role in the accident more than a week after the crash. Brittani Senser, an aspiring pop singer, testified that she was angry after media reports linked her to the accident.

Brittani Senser discussed her role in the situation on "Good Morning America" Tuesday. "I don't feel like I forced her," she said. "I was under the impression that my family was in complete compliance with authorities. When the news broke and there wasn't a driver identified [there was] speculation that it could have been any of us. I told them, because I knew ? that she had to take responsibilities for what she'd done."

Amy Senser's defense lawyers countered that Brittani Senser was actually angry that the hit-and-run had caused damage to her career, saying that the 28-year-old was more upset about losing a charity singing gig than about Phanthavong's death.

Brittani Senser also said that she is unsure how truthful her stepmother has been throughout the trial.

"I [do] believe that she is remorseful," she told Robin Roberts on "GMA." "But I kind of believe the judge. It's hard to believe that you didn't know you hit something. I don't know if she knew she'd hit a person. It's hard to believe from the evidence that she didn't know she hit something."

Senser was found guilty in two of three felony counts related to criminal vehicular homicide.

During the trial, Joe Senser lost his cool with the media.

"What channel are you with?" asked Senser. In another outburst, Senser asked members of the media "Why don't you get a life?"

Senser played four years with the Vikings in the early 1980s before a knee injury ended his career. He co-owns Joe Senser's Restaurant and Sports Theater, a Minneapolis-St. Paul-area restaurant chain, and has worked as a Vikings radio color commentator.

Rep. Rick Kriseman warns drivers about woes of new Florida PIP law

Florida?s cracking down on personal injury protection auto insurance fraud. A new PIP law that took effect on Sunday restricts what types of medical treatment an injured person can receive and even the amount of coverage they are entitled to regardless of what they pay for.

Supporters say the law will reduce insurance premiums but Democratic State Representative Rick Kriseman has been a staunch opponent. He said there are loopholes in the PIP insurance law that need to be addressed and it does little to address actual fraud.

Kriseman isn?t seeking re-election for his seat in the House.

Apple to offer smaller, cheaper iPad this fall: report

1 hr.

We've heard that Apple might be testing out a smaller version of?the iPad plenty of times in the past, but now there are multiple reports which sound quite certain of the Cupertino-based company's plans. After all, it must?intend to compete directly with the Nexus 7, a low-cost tablet recently announced by Google.

There are two independent reports???one from the Wall Street Journal and one from Bloomberg???both of which rely on anonymous sources "familiar with the situation" or with "knowledge of the plans," and claim that we'll see this mini-iPad soon.

According to the Wall Street Journal's report,?component makers in Asia are "preparing for mass production in September of a tablet computer with a smaller screen than the iPad."?This mystery tablet's screen will "likely be smaller than eight inches," the report explains. (The iPad has measured in at 9.7-inches since the first generation, for reference.)

Bloomberg's sources also suggest a smaller screen ? they describe it as being "7 inches to 8 inches diagonally"?? and add that it will not be a high-resolution "Retina" display like the one seen on the third-generation iPad. (Hello, cost-saving measures!)

Every?time there's talk of a smaller iPad, I tend to point out a spiel given by the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs back in 2010.?During an earnings call in October of that year, Jobs stated?that he didn't think that it's possible to make a great 7-inch tablet. A 9.7-inch device such as the current iPad is "the minimum size required to create great tablet apps," he said.

Of course, plenty of time has passed since Jobs' rejection of a smaller iPad. The mobile device market has?changed since then and Apple might be?looking to compete more directly with smaller, cheaper tablets such as the Nexus 7 (or Kindle Fire, for that matter).

I've reached out to Apple for comment on the whole matter, but as I suspect the company will keep its lips sealed?? as it tends to do when it comes to unannounced products?? I consulted my Magic Q-Ball for its thoughts on whether a mini-iPad is coming soon. It said "maybe."?

Wimbledon semis: Djokovic-Federer, Murray-Tsonga

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? After curling in a 102 mph ace to grab a two-set lead a mere 56 minutes into his Wimbledon quarterfinal Wednesday, Roger Federer casually pulled an extra tennis ball from his pocket and strolled to sit in his changeover chair for a sip to drink.

No fist pump. No yell of excitement. No energized jog to the sideline.

There still was work to be done; nothing to be taken for granted. Motivated by the bitter memory of quarterfinal losses at the All England Club the past two years, including a wasted two-set edge in 2011, six-time Wimbledon champion Federer bullied 26th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to reach his record 32nd career Grand Slam semifinal.

"Feels great being back in the semis. ... Haven't been here in the last couple years," the third-seeded Federer said. "So this is nice, to be back to a place where I've been so many times before."

He's two wins away from a seventh Wimbledon championship, which would equal a mark set by William Renshaw in the 1880s ? back when the defending champion received a bye directly into the final ? and tied by Pete Sampras in 2000.

Nothing worked for Youzhny, including a kidding plea for help from eight-time major champion Andre Agassi, who was seated next to his wife, Steffi Graf, in the front row of the Royal Box, near Prince William and his wife, Kate.

"I know I'm playing really well," Federer said. "I am aware things are going to get complicated in the next match."

Sure are.

That's because he'll face a familiar foe Friday: No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, who didn't have too much trouble while beating No. 31 Florian Mayer of Germany 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

This will be the sixth semifinal in the past eight Grand Slam tournaments, and 27th meeting overall, for Federer and Djokovic, and their first at Wimbledon.

Federer leads 14-12, but Djokovic won six of their last seven matches, including at the French Open a month ago.

"There's no secrets with those guys. They know how to play each other," said Federer's coach, Paul Annacone. "So it's really going to be who plays the bigger points better."

The other men's semifinal will be No. 4 Andy Murray of Britain against No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

Neither has won a Grand Slam title or been to a Wimbledon final.

Cue "Murray Mania," as it's known around these parts. He is trying to become the first British man to earn the trophy at the All England Club since Fred Perry in 1936; the last to even make it to the title match was Bunny Austin in 1938.

"If you think too much about it, and you read the newspapers and you watch the stuff on TV that's said about you, I think it would become far too much," Murray said. "But if you kind of shield yourself from it all and kind of just get into your own little bubble, only listen to the people that are around you, then it's something you can deal with."

He was one point from facing a two-set deficit before coming back to eliminate No. 7 David Ferrer of Spain 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (4) to get to the semifinals for the fourth year in a row. Murray lost at that stage to Andy Roddick in 2009, then to Rafael Nadal in 2010 and 2011 ? and No. 2 Nadal's stunning exit in the second round last week ratcheted up expectations this would be Murray's year.

"Subconsciously, I'm probably extremely stressed out right now," Murray said, "but I try not to feel it."

A basketball fan, he likened his situation to that of LeBron James, who recently won his first NBA championship with the Miami Heat after twice losing in the finals.

"I've been close a lot of times and not quite made it. Just have to keep putting myself in the position, and hopefully it will click," said Murray, the runner-up at the U.S. Open in 2008, and the Australian Open in 2010 and 2011. "There's a lot of people that said he would never win. ... Sometimes it takes guys a bit longer than others."

Tsonga, a finalist at the 2008 Australian Open, got to his second consecutive Wimbledon semifinal by defeating Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

He's 1-5 against Murray, including a loss at Wimbledon two years ago.

In the women's semifinals Thursday, 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams plays No. 2-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, and No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland faces No. 8 Angelique Kerber of Germany. Williams is a four-time Wimbledon winner; none of the other three women has reached the final. The 30-year-old American is trying to become the first woman at least that age to win any major title since Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1990.

Federer, who turns 31 on Aug. 8, has gone 2? years without adding to his record total of 16 Grand Slam titles. And he hasn't won Wimbledon since 2009, losing to Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals two years ago, then Tsonga in the quarterfinals last year after taking the first two sets.

If he wins Sunday's final to end his major trophy drought, the Swiss star would overtake Djokovic in the rankings and tie Sampras' record of 186 weeks at No. 1.

"He definitely wants to prove himself ? and to everybody else ? that he can win it once again," Djokovic said. "We both have to play at our best in order to get a win."

The Serb is 43-2 with five titles at the last seven majors, with one loss to Federer and one to Nadal, both at the French Open.

"He showed why he's the best player right now in the world. He left me no chance in the second set," Mayer said. "Roger also has to play on a really high level to have a chance to beat Novak."

Undisturbed by whipping wind or passing rain, Federer certainly looked good against Youzhny, who's seen this act before: Federer has won all 14 of their matchups.

In the fourth round, Federer needed a medical timeout to get treatment for an aching back. Didn't seem to be a problem at all Wednesday, when he won 49 of 66 service points.

"However it feels, if he plays like this, I'll take that any day of the week," said Annacone, who also coached Sampras.

By the end of the second set, two-time U.S. Open semifinalist Youzhny was screaming at himself in Russian or throwing his arms aloft in mock celebration after winning the occasional point.

After Federer flicked one particularly impressive defensive backhand and got to break point in the third set's opening game, Youzhny turned with his palms up to seek suggestions from Agassi, who smiled back. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge applauded. Youzhny, apparently pleased to play the role of court jester, promptly double-faulted.

When a reporter made a tongue-in-cheek remark about in-match coaching being against the rules, Youzhny grinned and said: "If he helped me, I'm ready to pay a fine."

Djokovic, at 25 the youngest quarterfinalist, seems to know exactly what to do against Federer, the oldest.

Into his ninth consecutive major semifinal, a streak that ranks fourth behind Federer's record 23, Djokovic never had won a grass-court title until a year ago at Wimbledon.

That success, and his tremendous two-year run, fuel Djokovic's confidence going into Friday's matchup.

"We never played on grass," Djokovic noted, "so I think it's going to be interesting for both of us to see what happens."

For the rest of us, too.
