>> reporter: the national anthem is notorious for difficulty prompting some to lip sync . one forgettable example is whitney houston at the 1991 super bowl and jennifer hudson got the same helping hand and queen of soul aretha franklin hit some rough spots as she sang the national anthem in freezie ing temperatures. franklin told nbc news if beyonce decided to take no chances in the cold weather she wouldn't blame her for it.

>> sounds good to me. this whole controversy started when the director of the marine band reported the singer and the band had used prerecorded tracks, a comment the band spokesperson then backed away from. so far only beyonce and a hand full of other people probably know for sure how much was live and mem or x. the fact she's scheduled to sing at the super bowl in 10 days means millions of americans will be hanging on to every note trying to tell for sure.
