Step 1 ? Pick a new theme
When we bought the house our bedroom was the last room to get decorated. In fact, in never actually got decorated at all. First it was painted an awful pumpkin color then I switched it up to what I thought was a sea green but was actually grey. It was depressing and forgotten about.
So the first step in my mini bedroom makeover was to pick a theme for the room. I?m the kind of person that likes every room in the house to be different. My living room has a jungle feel with olive green and floral notes. The kitchen is burgundy with an Italian theme. One bathroom has a blue-green beach theme and the other a brown and green Asian theme with bamboo accents. Oh and the laundry room has a light blue country feel. So it didn?t leave me with a whole lot of options for my bedroom. I had to step out of my comfort zone for this one and decided on yellow. It?s my least favorite color in the rainbow! But then every time I was in a store I was noticing grey damask patterns paired with a lemon yellow that made me instantly fall in love.
Step 2 ? Fresh Paint
To give the room a dramatic change without costing a pretty penny we went to the local hardware store and got a couple of gallons of paint. Going from a dull grey to an obnoxiously bright yellow was a major adjustment. I thought for sure I was making a huge mistake ? that is until I started adding pieces of grey in the room that contrasted with yellow and even toned it down a bit.
Step 3 ? Fluff It Up
The focal point of most bedrooms is the bed so it?s only fitting to start there. For under $100 you can get a pretty decent bedding set and in our case we only needed a new duvet cover, pillow cases and some fluffy accent pillows to make the change.
Step 4 ? Accessorize
It?s the little things that make a room pop. You can add a small accent table, candles and picture frames. On a wood floor a runner rug gives the space a whole new look. And none of this stuff has to be expensive. I loved picking random pieces from stores Kohls and Hobby Lobby. But my favorite spot for unique decor is Target. They?ve always got new collections in the Home area like this lamp that just happened to be perfect for our grey and yellow theme. You can also take old decor and make it match with a little spray paint.

Step 5 ? Personalize
The fun part for me was making the room MINE. Well okay, not 100% mine since I share the room with my husband but decorating really isn?t his thing so he just goes along with whatever I pick so long as it isn?t too girly. But it?s the little things that make this space homey for me like the pictures and the vinyl quote above the bed. It?s all a work in progress but for now it?s exactly the mini makeover I needed.

Now that most of it is put together ? I?m completely and utterly in love with my color choices. It?s always risky when big changes happen around me being the creature of habit I am, but I?m glad I decided to go through with it.
